3rd Grade Newsletter

September 28th - October 2nd

1. Our Speeding to Read Kick- Off field trip is this Tuesday, September 29th. We will be departing Beck at approximately 9:30 am and returning around 1:00 pm. All students will be eating lunch in their classrooms upon returning to school. We recommend that they bring their lunch, or they can order a sack lunch from the cafeteria (ham or turkey sandwich). **Sunscreen is recommended since we will be sitting in the stands at Texas Motor Speedway. Please apply sunscreen before school; we are not allowed to apply sunscreen. Also, we highly suggest that your student bring a water bottle with them on the field trip! Students can also bring an extra snack to take with them on the field trip**

2. Thank you for joining us at Curriculum Night! If you were unable to attend last Tuesday, you can access the information on your child's homeroom teacher's website.

3. Sign-Ups for Parent Teacher Conferences will be coming home soon! Parent teacher conferences will take place the week of October 5th.

4. For the past three weeks, reading teachers have administered the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) to each student to find their independent reading level. This information will be shared with you during upcoming parent teacher conferences.

We are looking forward to another great week at Beck! As always, please contact us any time with questions.

The Third Grade Team

Learning Targets

A Learning Target is the desired goal of each task in which your child will actively be involved. In addition, it engages your child in reflective evaluation of their own performance.

Writers Workshop:

We will review the writing process so that we can be prepared to take pieces of writing from ideas to publishing this year! I'll know I have it when I can generate ideas, complete a plan, draft, revise, edit and publish. *Students will take the beginning of year writing assessment this week. It is not graded and will be used to guide instruction and set goals.*

Readers Workshop:

We will explore various reading skills including decoding unknown words, cause and effect, and story elements so that we can become better readers. I'll know I have it when I can use word parts to solve word problems when reading and journal about cause and effect relationships.

Social Studies:

We will explore the various characteristics of maps and how they provide information so that we can understand that maps have various purposes. I will create my own grid map including a compass rose and legend and explain how to get from place to place!

Math Workshop:

We will round numbers to the nearest ten so that we can estimate the total of two or more two-digit numbers. I will know I have it when I can estimate numbers to find the sum. *Look for your student's Module 2 pre-test coming home sometime this week!*

We will explore properties of matter so that I can begin to understand the difference between them. I'll know I have it when I can identify properties specific to a phase of matter.

Our campus goal is 98% attendance every day. We appreciate your support in helping us reach this goal by scheduling doctor's appointments, vacations, and other activities outside of the regular school day. If your child is sick we certainly understand and encourage you to keep them home for the day. Please send a note or email beckelem@nisdtx.org if you child will be out sick. Thank you!!

Speeding to Read

This year Beck has been invited to participate in Texas Motor Speedway's SPEEDING TO READ program. We will be competing against 7 other schools in the area to see who can read the most books!! There will be 4 "turns," around the racetrack, or checkpoints in which student totals will be calculated and prizes/medals will be distributed to students who are in the lead.

There will be a kick-off assembly at Texas Motor Speedway on September 29th (we will send more information home about this trip soon). For more information about the program, please visit the website at http://www.speedingtoread.com/

This week your child will receive their Speeding to Read log. Using this log, students can record the books they have finished reading. Any book read at home or in class counts towards meeting their goal! Please make sure that your child records the title of the book in the correct category (picture book, chapter book, graphic novel, or NASCAR book). Categorizing these books helps us to calculate how many "stickers" your child will earn for our tracking chart at school.

Please contact your child's language arts teacher if you have any questions about this program!
