Newsletter Week 2 Term 2

Newsletter 12 - Week 2 Term 2

Children’s Day of Prayer Liturgy went very well last week. Children arrived in their National Costume and we were all greeted at the beginning of the Liturgy in many languages. Thank you to those parents who joined us and also to the parents who dressed their children in their national costume. It was great to see so many of our children dress up for the occasion. Thank you to our DRS Bernie Hall for organising this liturgy.

We had four teams entered in the EPRO8 competition last week and the ‘Nuts and Bolts’ team of Sean Keeling, Jessica Bannan, Elizabeth Parnell and Ben Fredericksen went through to the semi-finals. All the children participating did very well.

We are hosting the Sport and Cultural Day on Tuesday 18th May at JPC. We have eight other Catholic Schools in our area who will be participating in this event. Our teams for Netball, Football, Hockey, Ripper Rugby and Chess will be chosen from our Year 5 and 6 children. In the afternoon there is a RE Quiz, Religious Drama, Scripture Reading and Speeches. If you child is participating please have them return their notices.

Tonight, JPC is hosting a session with Dr Emma Woodward in the JPC gym. Her transformational session will provide you with the essential information and powerful practical strategies to help teens thrive through anxiety. It starts at 7.00pm and you are asked for a gold coin donation.

JPC is presenting “Chicago” the High School Edition from the 14th May to 29th May. Tickets are available from Eventbrite. We were lucky to see a couple of items from the show at our Gala Day. The show will be well worth seeing.

Next week we have our School Cross Country in the Redwoods for Year 3 to 6 students. Permission and Transport forms have been sent to you via the School App. Please ensure that you fill in the form online.

See later in this Newsletter for dates to remember.

Kind regards

David Macmillan

Message from DRS Bernie Hall

Thank you to all the families who attended last week’s Children’s World Day of Prayer. It was fantastic to hear students speak in their national languages and see them in their national colours or national dress.

This term classes are attending Parish Masses. Your child’s teacher will let you know in advance when their Mass is on. Our whanau are invited to these Parish masses with your child’s class and this will be followed by a shared morning tea afterwards in the Church hall. As a community of faith we are called to practice and promote ‘encounters’ with Christ and one way of doing this, is to attend Mass as a family - thank you in advance.

Our Catholic Sports and Cultural Day is next week. This is a fantastic initiative promoted by our Principal and hosted by our school, to invite and engage with our fellow Catholic schools in the region. The afternoon will be a combination of events involving representatives from our school in quizzes, drama, speeches, and Scripture readings.

PB4L is a Ministry of Education initiative which was developed to help NZ schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. A key part of this for our school is having our school values at the very heart of the way we live and learn at St.Mary’s.

Last week we talked about J.O.Y. This week it is COURAGE!

Courage - We are resilient and show perseverance

Everyday at school is filled with learning - academic learning, learning to work with others, learning to balance our emotions… Sometimes learning is really challenging and we need to have courage.

At school we encourage our students to Be Brave (try new things and take risks in learning), Learn from mistakes and keep trying, Bounce back from difficulty.

You can help at home by encouraging your children to try new things. Encourage them to see mistakes as an opportunity to learn more. Celebrate when they bounce back.

Here is what some of our children said when we asked them what the value Courage meant to them:

“It’s taking the bus to school” Hope, Kakano 6

“Be brave, be strong” Arianne, Middle school

“It’s like if you are scared to go and say a speech or something, you find strength in happy thoughts, like thinking that someone will be proud of you, so you can do it” Ella, Senior school.

Participation in Kapa Haka is an option for Middle School and Senior School students this term.

Sessions are on Wednesdays from 2pm to 2.40pm. The first few weeks are a time for tamariki to observe what it means to be in the Kapa Haka group and decide if they want to 'have a go'.

Please encourage your child to think about whether they would like to be involved.

Last Friday we had over 120 Tamariki take part in the 2021 Mini Marathon! This event keeps growing each year with 3,000 participants completing the 2km track. It was a fantastic morning with everyone giving it 100% with huge smiles. Thank you to our amazing parents & staff who helped make this another successful event.
