Issue 7

The end is near-

I am very excited for our last projects of the semester as they are some of my favorite. Middle schoolers will be working with clay, Art One students will be working with Paper Mache and advanced art will be working on a collaborative project. We stay busy all the way up until the last week of school.

Artwork will start coming home. Please encourage your student to bring their work home.

Caitlyn goes to Jefferson City

Last week Mr. Beatty and myself had the privilege of attending a ceremony at our state capitol in Jefferson City honoring some of Missouri's young artists. Caitlyn Close was selected by our local senator Dan Hegeman to display her work in the Capitol. The highlight of our visit was Mr. Hegeman taking the time to leave the Senate floor to personally congratulate Caitlyn in the Senate Chambers.

More info about the exhibit:

Established in 2014, a joint effort between the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education, the Missouri Art Education Association, and sponsored by Senator David Pearce, the Senate Art Exhibit showcases fine arts programs in all 34 Senate Districts. The exhibit is located on the grounds of the Capitol in the hallway that leads from Senate parking to the Capitol ground floor entrance.

K-12 teachers from any arts discipline can submit images of a work or performance. Each of our 34 State Senators select a winning image to represent their district. These images are printed and hung throughout 2017 in the Missouri Capitol to advocate legislator support for the arts.

Goals for next year!

Many students have signed up for art again next year! It is exciting to see the art program growing and to have so much support.

With all this new excitement I am looking to better the program to ensure that each of my students are prepared to move onto college.

As I am setting goals for next years advanced art group I am focusing on real world design problems. Each art student will keep and maintain a professional quality hardbound black sketchbook each day. This will be a means for students to record design ideas and research. Students will also design a personal website where they will maintain a professional quality portfolio of their work. I also plan to have professional designers come and speak with the students and discuss career goals and college readiness with the students. Several colleges and universities will come and talk with my art students about their programs and with luck we will be able to do a few college and museum visits.

Students will have the opportunity to apply to college readiness programs like The Missouri Fine Arts Academy and programs offered by the Kansas City Art Institute, and the Nelson Adkins Museum of Art. Applying for these programs is very similar to college and takes a lot of time and work but I am committed to helping your artist though this process. I would love to see more students apply to these programs. We had three artists apply to MoFFA this year and all three of our students were accepted, so, hard work pays off!

Art Club will be held every Tuesday after school. All students are welcome!
