BARBER BULLETIN
Week of April 3-7, 2017
Sharing what I learned....
It is important to me that if I am out of the building then I want to always be transparent with you and ensure that I share with you some of my takeaways so you know more about my professional development.
On Thursday, I attended one of the SCASA workshops hosted at Saluda Shoals. The focus was on Relational Leadership.
We focused on the book by Simon Sinek, Start with Why. Ever read it? One of the most powerful quotes in the book is this: "People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe." This resonated with me because of the emphasis we have put on the WHY this year - everything we have done, we have tried to offer a WHY. I hope that you will find that we will dig even deeper with that when we return from Spring Break. The LightHouse Team will lead our staff through the SEE DO GET Model to help us interpret the WHY behind each event we host at Pontiac throughout the year.
Another powerful discussion we shared in the workshop was around Daniel Pink's book centered around motivation. DRIVE is a great book if you haven't read it before. The quote that we spent time interpreting during the workshop is this: "Carrots and sticks are so last century. For 21st century work, we need to upgrade to autonomy, mastery, and purpose."
It is my hope that you have autonomy in your classroom, mastery in your field of work, and purpose to serve. I hope that you feel that you are using your full potential and are growing professionally each year. I hope that you feel like your work matters and makes an impact on the students you serve.
How do you provide this autonomy, mastery, and purpose in your classroom? There is nothing wrong with extrinsic motivators. But how do you provide intrinsic motivators to your students as well?
ARTS DAY!
Arts Day is Thursday from 8:45 - 2:30. We are doing our best to fill all the time slots with performances/activities but some slots remain unfilled, so teachers may want to have a lesson or two on the back burner for Thursday just in case. Remember there is no global that day because all of the spaces and teachers will be utilized.
We will share our master schedule Tuesday afternoon.
T-shirts will be delivered Tuesday so most likely will go home with the students on Wednesday.
We will serve bag lunches on Thursday.
Don't forget to order from Albert's Deli (info is in the teacher's lounge) by Tuesday afternoon for Arts Day. Thank you Jamie Gordon for coordinating this!
Please bring a snack or drinks to share with the staff on Thursday. Paper products will be provided. We will have a hospitality room set up in the lounge for you to visit throughout the day.
You are welcome to take a break during a session to make up for your planning - just make sure someone is keeping an eye on your students for you.
Please remind your students to use their concert manners and feel free to step in to discipline - artists would rather have you do that than have to stop their presentation.
Most importantly, have fun and thank you for supporting the arts! We appreciate you supporting all of our fundraisers so we could afford to bring in these talented performers and artists!
THE LAST MEAL!!
Let's all bring an item for everyone to enjoy after Early Dismissal on Friday!
Here's the catch: Bring an item to share that starts with your LAST name to share at our LAST MEAL.
Ex. My last name starts with a B so I might bring blueberries, boiled peanuts, or bananas.
