Stay Healthy this Cold & Flu Season
Cold and flu season has already begun, but there are things you can do to keep yourself and your children healthier. Prevention measures include washing your hands frequently, getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Home is the best place for a child who is ill. Too Sick for School informational guidelines can help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school.
Inclement Weather Information
When the weather gets snowy or icy, school schedules may be affected. The District generally posts the announcement of delayed school opening or school closure by 5:15 a.m. All Portland Metro area media outlets announce the information on TV newscasts and online.
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability for employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.
The District will notify parents and staff via SchoolMessenger with a Non-School Hours Emergency message. Please manage your communication preferences in SchoolMessenger InfoCenter.

Safe Routes to School Update
Congratulations to Bonny Slope Elementary School, our 2019 Walk + Roll Champion! Bonny Slope saw a whopping 49% increase in the amount of students who walked/biked/bused on Oct. 2nd. That equals 287 less cars dropping off students in their parking lot that morning. They even had someone playing bagpipes as students arrived in the morning.
Schools are still reporting their participant numbers. To date, this one event has decreased the number of cars driving to school by 6,630 and saved our environment from 10,343 pounds of carbon emissions.
Working together, WE can make a huge impact within our communities, district and planet. Many schools have stepped up to promote safe, active transportation every month this year by holding monthly walk + roll events. This can be as simple as advertising your monthly walk + roll day and setting out prizes for students who participate. Or other schools have parents who coordinate monthly or weekly walking groups called a Walking School Bus to allow students to continue walking together throughout the year. Contact your school to see how you can participate or start your own event. Beaverton Safe Routes to School is always available to help your school get started. Walk, Bike, Bus… It’s the way to go!
After-School Activities
Did you know the Communications & Community Involvement Department provides links to many flyers for after-school activities as a service to parents, students, and community members of the Beaverton School District during the school year. Most schools also have information on Community tables as well.
The word flyer includes but is not limited to: poster, pamphlet, brochure or catalog. We review materials requests from community-based, nonprofit and for-profit organizations on a monthly basis. Flyers for September are available now. New flyers will be posted each month. In November, links to new flyers will be after posted Tuesday, November 5, 2019.
