Advisory in Action
This year we are trying something new, extending our monthly advisory meeting to once a week. Each Monday students sit down with their peers and advisers to discuss pertinent subjects such as growth mindset, values and morals, and internet safety. Recently, most of advisers have been speaking with their students about the dangers of bullying and the unintended consequences that may occur. The students contributed to an activity that allowed them to reflect on how they can be the change that we need in our school and in society. Each student was asked to write ways that they can show compassion or kindness to others. In the end we used the responses of our students to create a beautiful symbol of solidarity.
Great job to the collective efforts of our students!
Jeans for a dollar success
This past Wednesday we had our first Jeans for a cause fundraiser. Jeans for a Cause is a service that our school does to support those within our community near or far and encourages our students to do the same. Students and staff had a chance to pay $1 (or more) to wear jeans and a uniform shirt for the day. So far this year students raised money to support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (September) and Susan G. Komen Foundation (October) raising a total of $110. We are so proud of our students for raising funds for a cause and we continue to encourage them to do so in and outside of the school to build philanthropic character.
Awesome job! Look out for next month's fundraiser!
Teacher Professional Development
This Friday our teachers participated in a professional development session about Trauma- Informed Classrooms. Mr. Rayshawn Wilson, an award winning author and CEO of Capital Behavioral Health, gave our staff information on how trauma effects students and how that translates in the classroom. Mr. Wilson provided resources and ideas for classroom interventions to allow us to better approach those students and be the difference in their lives by creating an open environment; listening to their story and understanding the student's needs. This professional development was informative and enlightening, and we hope to bring some of the approaches that we've learned into the classroom.
