Educational Apps that can be used in a K-12 Setting

Journal Jar

What is it?

Journal Jar is a free app that assists in creative thinking. You click on the jar and it gives you a topic that you could write about. If you don't like the topic just keep clicking and it will spit out more topics!

How can it be used?

This app could be used for a language arts class. If students are assigned to write a short story, journal article, letter, or anything else they can use this app to inspire them and give them something to write about. Teachers could also use this as a prompt for simple writing exercises as it is quick and easy. At the beginning of class they could have each student click on the journal jar and write a paragraph about whatever the jar suggests.

Poll Everywhere

What is it?

This is an app that gives students a voice, especially those who are usually unwilling to speak out in class. Students write down what they have to say on their mobile device and it is then posted to a forum where everyone can see it on the screen. It can also be used for simple polling exercises to get an idea of what students think.

How can it be used?

Teachers can use this app for practically any subject. If they just want to get the opinion of their students on a subject or question without having their opinions influenced by their classmates this is an excellent app to use. Say a teacher was teaching students about a controversial issue such as the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and wanted to know if students thought this was an appropriate action or not, they could use this app to hear from their students.
