Mindset Mondays
Happy MONDAY McKinley Skippers! I hope you are ready to make it a great week.
Our grade 5 students had a fabulous time last week at Hiram House Camp! Thank you to all of the teachers who helped to make this awesome experience a success. It's a short week but there is plenty of excitement happening. We hope you will join us to learn more about the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program at the PTO meeting (Details Below)! Also, a visitor from Then Design Architects will join us at our Community Connect meeting to talk about the new schools project and where we are in the process.
A bit more about Mindset:
The way parents talk about ability and learning can have powerful effects on their kids’ beliefs. Below are three ways parents can instill a growth mindset. And remember, developing a growth mindset in yourself and in your kids is a process that takes time. Have a growth mindset about developing a growth mindset!
- Recognize your own mindset: Be mindful of your own thinking and of the messages you send with your words and actions.
- Praise the process: Praising kids for being smart suggests that innate talent is the reason for success, while focusing on the process helps them see how their effort leads to success.
- Model learning from failure: When parents talk positively about making mistakes, kids start to think of mistakes as a natural part of the learning process!
No Matter What your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment" - Carol Dweck

McKinley has joined Artsonia!!
I am so excited to announce that McKinley has joined Artsonia, the world's largest student art museum! It's a free, safe, educational program designed to connect parents and families with their child's creative activities at school. Your child should be bringing home their invite to Artsonia sometime this week!! Feel free to add other family members to view your child's portfolio! You can purchase items that will have your child's creativity on them and a percentage of it will go to McKinley's art program!
Thank you!

Avery Dennison Project Update!
McKinley has partnered with Avery Dennison to pilot a new student tracking software! Students will receive their lanyards tomorrow. Please remind your child to carry their lanyard when they enter or exit the building. The scanner can read the code through a book bag, we have provided lanyards for ease of use. Thank you to all who have agreed to participate in this project! We are looking forward to learning more about how this can be used to improve school safety. Please encourage your child to keep the lanyard in a safe place (so it does not get misplaced :).
If your child DOES NOT get a lanyard it is because your have either opted out of participation OR did not return the participation form.
Please contact the office with any questions. Thank you! Mrs. P

International Baccalaureate Updates
As we make our way into fall, our McKinley Global Kids are wrapping up the first inquiry of the year. Both our 4th grade and 5th grade inquirers are finishing exploration into Where We Are in Place and Time. The 5th grade students are investigating the impact of technology and human exploration while our 4th graders are looking into the effects of environmental modifications, then identifying and analyzing evidence of early settlements. The 1st and 2nd grade classes are digging into Who We Are as they learn and discuss conflict resolution, taking responsibility for actions and respecting the expectations of different environments. How We Organize Ourselves with rules and responsibilities as well as people connecting in groups is the focus of the Kindergarten inquiry. The littlest Skippers are learning about the stages and cycles of living things through their How the World Works inquiry while our 3rd graders are exploring different forms of expression during How We Express Ourselves.
Curious About New Schools?
Join Us For Community Connect! This month, we are pleased to welcome our guest speaker Cheryl Fischer of Then Design Architects who will present an update on the New Schools Project. Thank you to the VFW for hosting us this month!
We hope to see you there.
Sharing Cultural Traditions
Through October and November, McKinley will be busy with inquiries into celebrations and traditions, changes over time, energy sources, careers, community changes, cultural diversity and the importance of laws and principles. As our students are exploring, investigating and learning, we will focus on supporting and encouraging good citizenship by being caring, knowledgeable and open-minded. Demonstrating empathy, tolerance and enthusiasm will be encouraged.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK MCKINLEY SKIPPERS!
