Congratulations SMS PBIS
In making the announcement, Walmart stated, "We are thrilled to support your work in our communities and share your desire to provide local impact. By receiving this grant, you are part of a long history of Walmart's commitment to giving back to the communities where we operate. In fact, Mrs. Helen Walton used to say that it's not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived."
PBIS, which stands for Positive Bahavior Integration and Supports, is a program being implemented at SMS to encourage positive behavior and responsible decisions in our students. The PBIS committee, along with the SMS staff, encourage students to in positive ways. Positive reinforcement is given to the students through RAIDER Bucks and quarterly Behavior Bashes.
Ms. Tiffany Neuhoff, who applied for the grant, told me that this money will probably be used for prizes for the students to spend their RAIDER Bucks on and for the next Behavior Bash. The committee will be meeting soon to discuss their options.
Congratulations PBIS!

IMPACT Activities
Sixth Grammar with Mrs. Riehle
Instead of making a list of resolutions this year, each student chose One Word to define their goals, dreams, ambitions, and who they want to be in 2019. They created a collage on a Google Slide that included their One Word Google Drawing, the definition of the word, a quotation that related to the word, intentions to live out the word, and a paragraph explaining the reasons why the word was chosen.
These turned out great! They are displayed in the 6th-grade hallway as a reminder throughout this quarter that we should continue to strive to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Happy New Year!
Heart Awareness Month
Heart disease doesn't happen just to older adults. It is happening to younger adults more and more often. This is partly because the conditions that lead to heart disease are happening at younger ages. 8th grade Health Education students will have the opportunity to complete "student CPR".
Student CPR is a mission-based program dedicated to training students to be confident, knowledgeable responders. This is accomplished by offering a high-quality program that adapts to unique classroom situations and is offered at no cost to the school or student.
Educators start by sending students through a paramedic-led video course. Students are able to train individually at their own pace, during school hours, or as a homework assignment. At the awareness level, Student CPR is 100% online.
In the February Newsletter, there will be a follow-up on this program. Thank you, Mrs. Durcholz, for providing this information and for stressing its importance with your students.
Middle School All State Choir
The students were chosen by a blind recording. Each school could send in only 8 tapes for judging. No one is guaranteed a spot in the choir. Mr. Kendall was very excited to have 6 of our 8 applicants accepted. This speaks very highly of our music program.
Mr. Kendall would like to thank everyone for supporting and allowing our students to be involved in this activity.

In Appreciation
This is the second distribution check from this endowment that the SMS Library has received. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Don and Sarah Heichelbech, who designated us as a recipient of these funds.
This endowment was established in memory of Mrs. Heichelbech's sister, Brenda Kilian, who was a teacher for 34 years in the Lafayette area. Ms. Kilian passed away on April 21, 2010. An endowment fund was established in her memory with the Dubois County Community Foundation. As some of you may remember, Mrs. Heichelbech was our school nurse before her retirement at the end of the 2016 - 2017 school year.
Again, our sincere appreciation goes out to Don and Sarah for honoring us with this grant money.
Academic Bowl
Mrs. Nichole Riehle and Mrs. Jen Schutte are the sponsors of the SMS Academic Bowl.
