KIA ORA VOGELTOWN WHANAU
Kia ora Vogeltown whānau, welcome to the newsletter for Week 4 of Term 3.
This week begins as it did last week - lots of flu and cold symptoms floating around. Covid is beginning to creep back into schools and Vogeltown is not immune - please let us know if you have a positive case in your home. It is timely to remind all our whānau about hand washing, blowing our noses, not coming to school if we are unwell, and testing for Covid.
Our Paetoki tamariki have been working very hard on their speeches. I must commend all the learners on their resilience in writing these, practising and delivering them - Tu Meke whanau! We have the speech finals for the Paetoki team next Thursday.
Our Huatoki team have been working on 'Whirling Worlds' and the cultures that make up our school. Did you know that we have 15 different cultures at Vogeltown School? We have:
NZ European, NZ Maori, African, Indian, Japanese, Samoan, Australian, German, Latin American, Vietnamese, Filipino and Dutch! What a massive array of whanau we have here!
In the Taranaki team, all our learners have been studying different countries. It was great to hear the tamariki talk about the facts they had learnt about Japan and China! Watch next weeks newsletter for some awesome art from these cultures!
Planning for 2024 - Enrolment scheme and Out of Zone enrolments
We are not planning to offer any 'out of zone' spaces for Term 1 of 2024 - this includes the new entrants spaces.
'In zone' enrolments
Please let the office know of any new enrolments for 2024 that we may not already have on our data base. This could be families / whānau who have moved into the school zone and have children turning 5 in 2024. Please note that children living in zone have automatic right of enrolment.
Year 7 enrolments for 2024
A reminder to our Year 6 students / families to get enrolled with your local intermediate or Year 7 - 13 school for 2023. There are open evenings and enrolment dates being advertised by the schools. Please keep a look out for these. Note that responsibility sits with parents and meeting enrolment dates is very important.
Start dates for 2024
In term 3 we begin planning for 2024. To give everyone an undate, we are publishing our start dates for 2024.
We will have our 'Mahitahi meetings' again next year (a chance to meet your child's teacher the day before school starts). This day will be Monday 29th January. School will start for all tamariki the following day, Tuesday 30th January.
Last chance to give us some feedback for our Strategic plan in the survey link below. A massive Tino Pai to the 110 whanau that have provided us with the feedback - we appreciate this so much!

ATTENDANCE AT VOGELTOWN - Week 4
Research shows that regular attendance benefits academic achievement, the development of social skills and competencies and friendships. If children are unwell or absent, please inform the office. If there are other factors that are impacting attendance please contact us so that we can work together. The Ministry of Education benchmark for regular attendance is 70% of students attending school 90% of the time. At Vogeltown School we meet this target on most weeks, this week we sit at 81% and this week we sit at 86% - see the graph below. There has been a lot of flu and cold bugs going around.
If you test for covid and it is positive, please let us know - we are still keeping data on this for the school.
PLEASE - WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK! CLOSES SOON!

DAFFODIL DAY 2023
From Carla Visagie - Rm 5 - read out in assembly 4/8/2023
The Beautiful Daffodil
A time for new beginnings
Winter is ending and Spring is near.
In China, Daffodils are symbols of good fortune. In Japan they are symbols of joy. In New Zealand Daffodils are symbols of hope. It gives hope to those who are figthing cancer. Everyday, 71 Nzers find out they have cancer, and no one should face cancer alone.
Daffodil day reminds us to support those who have cancer. Not just on daffodil day - but every day.
A warm hug, making someone smile - that is how I will spend my daffodil day.
You can help, by dressing up in yellow and orange on the 25th August and bring a gold coin to support daffodil day.
This day will be organised in conjunction with the school. Ka mau te wehi Carla!
