Fort Sumter
April 12 General P.G.T. Beauregard, in command of the Confederate forces around Charleston Harbor, opened fire on the Union garrison. Afternoon of April 13 Major Robert Anderson (garrison commander), surrendered the fort and was evacuate the next day.

Antietam
September 18th Robert E. Lee’s forces were near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Confederate retreat gave Abraham Lincoln the “victory” he desired before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. This war was the bloodiest war in history.

Vicksburg
May and June 1863, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S Grant’ armies converged on Vicksburg, investing the city and entrapping on Confederate army under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton. July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations. Grant’s successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the union armies.

Gettysburg
July 1st Union success faltered as Confederates pushed back against the Iron Brigade and exploited a weak Federal line at Barlow’s Knoll. On July 3rd fighting raged on Culp’s Hill with the Union regaining it lost ground. During this war 51,000 soldiers were in danger, wounded, missing, or captured.

Sherman's March to the Sea
July 21, 1864, Hood ordered Lt. Gen. William J. Hardee’s crops to make 15-mile night march and assault the Union left flank, commanded by Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson. Hood’s attack failed to dislodge the Federals who strengthened their foothold on the doorstep to Atlanta.

Fort Fisher
In field January 13th and all of the Union forces landed and prepared their attack on Maj. This was very scary for a lot of people getting prepared. January 15th a force moved on the fort from the rear. Confederate garrison surrendered, opening the way for a Federal thrust against Wilmington, the South’s last open seaport on the Atlantic Coast.

Appomattox Court House
April 8 Federal troops continually cut off from turning south, Lee headed west. When the troop had the final attempt to escape they realized they were trapped. Afternoon of April 9 General Lee surrendered his troops to General Grant at the McLean House.
