Red Ribbon Week at the Middle School
Life is Your Journey, Travel Drug Free
Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention awareness campaign celebrated in October each year. Throughout the week, kids are encouraged to make positive choices by staying away from drugs and alcohol.
Did you know? Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations (redribbon.org).
Monday-Wake up drug-free – wear your PJ's to school
Tuesday-Athletes stay away from drugs - wear your favorite jersey
Wednesday-Laugh to stay away from drugs – wear something to represent your favorite Vine (Vine was an app in which videos of 6 seconds long were recorded and shared--it no longer is in service but many of the videos can be found on youtube and some of the characters have huge followings--ask your kid if you want to know more.)
Thursday-Travel the world drug-free - wear something to celebrate your heritage or culture
Friday-Red Ribbon Celebration – wear red
Ask your child about the book, Refugee
1. Discuss the reasons that Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud’s families leave their homes. What are the situations in each of their lives that force them to flee? How are their situations similar and how are they different?
2. Why do you think the author chose to tell these three stories in alternating chapters? What is the effect on the reader of moving back and forth between the stories from different periods of history?
If you aren't reading this book with your child, I highly recommend you consider doing so. It is an engaging book for all ages and so many of the kids I've talked to are being impacted by the stories of the characters.

#RealTalk about Vaping Parent Presentation this Thursday Evening
Please consider coming to the Parent Presentation about Vaping this Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. in our cafeteria. Come early if you can and experience the "Hidden in Plain Sight" mock child's bedroom demonstrating to you where he/she could hide items he/she doesn't want you to find. For more information (or to see the dates of other presentations in the Township) and to register, please see a copy of the email that was sent home on October 11th here.
Tiger Tipline
While it is always best to talk directly to a staff member, we understand that sometimes this can be uncomfortable or difficult for students or parents. At Pleasantdale Middle School, we offer the Tiger Tipline as an anonymous tool for reporting unsafe, uncomfortable, or unkind behaviors and situations. We explicitly teach the students that if they ever see something or hear something that makes them feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or is unkind, either online or in person, they should tell a “trusted adult” which could be parents, school personnel, or other adults in their lives. The Tiger Tipline can be accessed here and we will post the link in Schoology and create a shortcut to the link on the student devices for easy access.
Dates for the Year
If you are like me, you want to know the dates for the year as far in advance as possible. As long as you understand that something may change due to unforeseen circumstances, I’d like to provide you access to the dates we’ve planned for the year (many of which are in the paper calendar you received in the mail). To access the middle school calendar dates, please click here.
