Message from the Director

“Spring work is going on with joyful enthusiasm.”— John Muir

The snowy days of winter have finally been replaced with the sunny days of spring. Nature is hard at work outside: flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing, and ducks are returning to Lake Riviera. And, likewise, our students have been springing into action in the classroom! This edition of the Brick Bridge highlights some of these activities, which include International SEL Day, World Down Syndrome Day, Read Across America Week, and Youth Art Month. We hope that you enjoy this birds-eye-view inside our classrooms.

Enjoy this edition -- and the beautiful weather!

Educationally yours,

Dr. Anderson

Director of Curriculum & Instruction

Brick Public Schools celebrated a virtual Read Across America in March to acknowledge the importance of reading and celebrate diversity in literature. NEA’s popular reading program had a fresh mission in 2019-2020 which was to refocus Read Across America with more diverse books, authors and readers. Brick Public Schools honored that goal and decided to host a district wide virtual celebration of reading this year highlighting diversity.

Brick Public Schools hosted its first ever VIRTUAL READ ACROSS AMERICA celebration with various book readings, virtual author visits, diverse virtual book shelves and schoolwide themed celebrations all in honor of the birthday of the late, Dr Seuss. It was a Seuss-tastical month of fun -filled events centered around reading!

Message from the NJDOE

The New Jersey Department of Education would like to thank you for your partnership in education. As we look forward to the 2021-2022 school year, GovLab at New York University has launched a joint venture with the New Jersey Department of Education asking New Jersey caregivers to share their views on the biggest challenges of supporting education in 2021. This New Jersey specific questionnaire is one of a series of national, online engagements, focusing on the problems, solutions and challenges facing our education system. From April 5–April 30, 2021, we encourage all educators, as well as caregivers and students, to utilize the YourEducationYourVoice platform through this engagement link.

ReinventED: Your Education, Your Voice is a public engagement project. The project focuses on the greatest challenges facing schools today and what is necessary to pave the Road Forward. The project aims to amplify the voices and views of students, caregivers, and educators, especially Black, Latinx, and other communities. Results will be openly published and developed into recommendations targeted for New Jersey’s policymakers and leaders working in the education space. Constituents’ voices are necessary to impact the Road Forward and education in 2021-2022 and beyond. The Department and GovLab would like to thank you for your participation.
