Literacy News!
Super Digital Citizens
This week in STEAM we continued our quest to be good digital citizens. Our 1st - 4th-grade classes were engaged in a new game called Interland where they learned how to be internet awesome! There is a link on the Hilton and STEAM Center websites if your child would like to play at home. In addition to the game, we also made Super Digital Citizens. These will help remind us to be safe online.

Power of Positive Connections
Anxiety in students is at an all time high. Jessica Minahan and Nancy Rappaport, authors of The Behavior Code, state that 27% of adolescents experience anxiety. Another eye opening statistic showed that children who were the most anxious in autumn of first grade were almost 8 times more likely to be in the lowest quartile of reading achievement and almost 2.5 times more likely to be in the lowest quartile in math achievement in the spring of first grade. When thinking about making and keeping positive connections, it is important for us to look at ways we can forecast different experiences that kids have. This could be for special events, parent leaving for a business trip, a new experience such as a sport, babysitter, etc. Forecasting is an easy way we can help to decrease the anxiety our kids may be possibly feeling.
Visual Schedules/Checklists
Used to forecast and structure A.M. and P.M.routines. Gives kids an idea of what is to come and what is next (especially when the concept of time has not been learned). Can be as simple as sticky notes breaking up tasks, class schedules of what a day looks like, or mapping out the major themes or goals of theday/week/month.
Peer Intervention
Giving students a visual model of a peer that they can focus on. Ask them about a student who always gets in trouble or a student who always seems to be called or is chosen by teacher. What does their outward behavior look like, what are they doing during transitions, what does their voice sound like. If siblings are present using them to restate directions or to be a positive example for a certain period of time (while at the table,
shopping, etc.)
Breaks (without consequence)
Allowing students a way out when feeling overwhelmed or frustrated (a walk in the hall or around the backyard, refueling station or safe spots, a hood up with head down, time on phone).
Transitions
Allowing time for students to process new expectations, rules/procedures or preferred tasks. Provide warning verbal and/or visual prompts of
the transition that is about to take place (30 minutes to bedtime, 15 minutes until brushing teeth).

Box Tops (October 26)
Please continue to collect box tops. The next deadline submission will be October 26. You can send them to school in a plastic bag with your child’s name and teachers name on it. In the past, money raised through this program financed the field trip transportation as well as granted up to $100 to each classroom for much needed supplies.
Kroger Shoppers
Hilton is now enrolled in the Kroger Rewards Program. Please support the school by linking us to your Kroger Rewards Card. Our number is 68151 or you can just type our school name in the search window at https://www.kroger.com/communityrewards
Amazon Smile
How fun would it be to shop, while at the same time, earning money for our school? Amazon Smile (https://smile.amazon.com) is through Amazon.com, in which they donate money for most items purchased through their website. The fun part is that the website keeps a running total on your account to see how much money you donate to the school just by shopping with them. Check out this 30 second video to see how you can add a shortcut to your (mobile) home screen to ensure all your Amazon purchases benefit Hilton Elementary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWgglu7ZCDE.
Coca Cola Give
Attention all Coca Cola drinkers! Another way to earn money for Hilton Elementary is through the Coca Cola Give Program. By collecting Coca Cola caps and codes, Hilton can earn money to purchase supplies for physical education, sports, technology and/or arts. Most Coca-Cola beverages that have a product code under its cap, or printed on its paper packaging, are eligible to be used for donation. Here is a link to the reference list of participating brands https://us.coca-cola.com/participating-brands. Please collect these clean items in a plastic bag and send to school with your child. There is a drawer in the office for collections.
