Students eating a lunch
1) Ask
2) Encourage
3) Notify
As adults who are responsible for the care of our students, our first step should be to ASK our students why they aren't eating. Often times, a simple observation and question is enough to have a child get a lunch. The next step should be ENCOURAGEMENT. Examples of encouragement are encouraging our students to try new foods, to at least grab a few items, and/or to walk through the line with us to help them make food choices. Lastly, if a student still isn't eating, we should NOTIFY the parents periodically. For some parents, they may already know this is happening and may or may not have an impact on changing the choices of our students. For other parents, they may not be aware and can be a great partner in helping our students make nutritious choices.
Teachers, if you are able to walk through at the start of lunch to observe who is and isn't eating, it makes a huge difference. I have seen, and continue to see, many teachers do this with our students on a routine basis. Please know that our cafeteria supervisors, SPED paras, Mark, and I consistently do what we can to get our students to eat.
Please let me know if you have any questions, thoughts, or ideas on this topic.
5th Annual Staff Sock Exchange
December 12 at 3:40 in the Lounge.
Please bring your socks to the exchange (we will not collect them ahead of time this year). If you can't come and would still like to exchange, send them with a friend or drop them off with Anne Kuffel ahead of time.
Wear your socks Friday, December 20 before Winter Break!
The Crayon Initiative
The Hopkins High School Student Council is completing a community service project this fall. They are partnering with The Crayon Initiative to recycle crayons and donate newly formed crayons to hospitals across the country. Their crayons will be donated to Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, Gillette Children’s, HCMC, St. Cloud Women and Children’s Center, and University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital.
Glen Lake Elementary is partnering with the student council to collect the used crayons that normally go in the trash or are unused. Collection boxes will be in the office and in the main entry way. So start checking those desk drawers for old crayons and bring them in!
