Dear Bobcat Parents,
Those of you who participate in the car rider line may have noticed that lately our completion time has greatly shortened since the first day of school. As a strategy to not have to sit and wait in the line for so long, many of you have chosen over time to come later to pick up your kids. This was a great strategy in the beginning, however, due to the current efficiency of our car rider line, our staff is finished taking numbers around 3:15pm. Those of you that were joining the line after 3:20, please plan to now join the car rider line by 3:10pm at the latest, so we can get all of the numbers taken down and get your kiddos to you as soon as possible.
Again, thank you for your ongoing support!
Sincerely,
Principal Kellner

Dear Parents and Families,
I’m sending my sincere gratitude for making our Book Fair an outstanding success!
Thanks to your contributions, we sold many books at our Fair and reached a record in
gross sales. We will use the proceeds for books, book cases, databases, and other
library related items. We also collected money in All for Books™, a program turning
Book Fair donations into books for children who cannot afford them.
My reward for hosting a Book Fair is watching your kids discover new books. All that joy
wouldn’t be possible without volunteers from our school community – you deserve my
special thanks.
If your child missed out on the Fair (or already finished every new book), there’s still
time to shop! Our Book Fair will continue online through October 06, 2022. Your online
purchases benefit our school. Click below to shop our Fair:

I hope to see you and your child at our next Fair. Until then, happy reading!
Gratefully,

Board action reinforces commitment to student and school safety
Dear Lake Travis ISD Staff, Parents and Guardians,
During Wednesday night’s school board meeting, our trustees approved two action items that will further support student and campus safety.
First, the board adopted a resolution authorizing the Lake Travis ISD administration to apply for the Bullet-Resistant Shield Grant Program. The recent tragedy in Uvalde emphasizes the importance of security in public schools. In response, the State of Texas authorized certain grant programs in order to improve the ability of public schools to respond to emergencies. One of these programs is the Bullet-Resistant Shield Program which provides funding for ballistic shields to be used by police officers employed by the District. In the event of a shooting, these ballistic shields will provide extra protection to our police officers.
Secondly, our school board voted to amend local policy that will allow the District to purchase, store, and administer opioid antagonists such as Naloxone (also known as Narcan) in the event of a drug-related overdose—in particular, fentanyl. Only a registered nurse or other designated and trained District employee will be authorized to administer this medication and may do so only in accordance with a standing order or procedures approved by a physician licensed to practice medicine in the state of Texas.
While we are not aware of any fentanyl overdoses at Lake Travis ISD, we know that the greater Austin community has been impacted. We want you to be informed of this crisis and partner with us to create awareness. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid typically used to treat patients with chronic severe pain. Under the supervision of a licensed medical professional, fentanyl has a legitimate medical use. According to the Drug Enforcement Agency’s website, illicitly manufactured fentanyl is often the ingredient used in counterfeit pills sold as something else like Xanax, Percocet, or oxycodone. It is important to note that while fentanyl may be present in pills, it can also be found in more commonly used products such as vape cartridges. Furthermore, law enforcement agencies are reporting that many who overdose on fentanyl believe they were taking something to help ease their anxiety. When someone is experiencing a fentanyl overdose, they might experience dizziness, weakness of the muscles, slow and shallow breathing, and unconsciousness. Fentanyl is highly potent. In fact, a dose the size of the tip of a pencil is considered a lethal amount.
The DEA is especially advising the public of an alarming emerging trend of colorful fentanyl, referred to as “rainbow fentanyl,” available across the United States. Drug traffickers have made these pills look like candy, coming in a variety of bright colors, shapes and sizes, in an effort to appeal to kids and young adults. We encourage parents to communicate the dangers of fentanyl to their children. Anyone can anonymously report or notify school officials of incidents or actions which may pose a danger to individuals or the school during or outside the instructional day through our Cavs Who Care tip line.
All LTISD campus nurses and police officers will be equipped with Narcan which can help reverse the effects of an opioid overdose within minutes. Narcan has proven to be a highly-effective, life-saving treatment when administered during an emergency. You can learn more about this medication at www.narcan.com.
At no other time have school safety and security been at the forefront of our daily operations as they are today. We know you expect nothing less. It is imperative that Lake Travis ISD take proactive measures to ensure response and care can be provided as quickly as possible in the event of an emergency occurring on school property. On behalf of our school board and the administration, thank you for your continued support and partnership. Working together, we will keep our students and schools safe.
Sincerely,
Paul Norton
Superintendent of Schools

SHAC
The Lake Travis School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is a group appointed by the board of trustees to serve at the district level. Members of the SHAC come from different areas of the community and from within the school district. The majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the district. SHACs assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in health education instruction. Additionally, SHACs play an important role in strengthening the connection between health and learning. They can help parents and community stakeholders reinforce the knowledge and skills children need to stay healthy for a lifetime. The SHAC liaison presents the committees' recommendations annually to the school board in the areas of nutrition, health education, human sexuality education, mental health, drug abuse prevention, and physical fitness and activity.
The SHAC meets 4-6 times throughout the year at the EDC from 1:00-2:30pm on the fourth Thursday of the month. If you are interested in serving on the SHAC, please submit an application here to be considered for membership. If you have additional questions, please contact Jennifer Lyon, Director of Health and SEL, at lyonj@ltisdschools.org.

DISCOVERY/GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM: PARENT REFERRAL INFORMATION - DEADLINE 10/21
Attention LTISD Parents and Guardians,
The Discovery Program, otherwise known as Gifted and Talented, is now accepting parent referrals for GT Screening via this google form.
Transfer students, who were already identified as GT coming from their previous district, should submit their google form as soon as possible, as the transfer student screening will be set within 30 days of the first day of school. Parents should send proof of their child's selection/participation in the previous GT program directly to the campus GT coordinator.
Parents can submit referrals for screening up until the end of the first 9 weeks, by October 21, 2022. Students will be tested during the 2nd 9 weeks of instruction. If the referral and permission forms are not submitted by the deadline, the student will have to wait until the next year's screening opportunity, as the spring screening session is only for students moving in new to the district after the fall testing window is closed.
The forms and further information about the program can be found here.
Once the request is submitted through the google form, the campus GT coordinator will contact parents via email when the testing dates are set and share additional information. Please plan to attend the Elementary GT Parent Night (virtual event) on October 14 at 11:30 AM for an informative presentation about the program along with a Q&A session with your campus GT teacher.
You are also welcome to contact your campus GT coordinator directly, at any time, with questions. Please reference the contact information below:

CAMPUS SECURITY
Safety and security is our top priority. We believe relationships are critical to successful schools, and ultimately, our families and students are the best partners in keeping our campuses safe. Our principals and school administrators investigate every reported tip or threat. We work with law enforcement and take quick and appropriate action, including notifying families, if there is a valid danger on campus.
We ask all of our families and students to please share any information regarding school or student safety by either directly contacting a school staff member or by using the Cavs Who Care Tip Line, our anonymous alert system. As LTISD grows, we will continue to explore and collaborate with other school districts to find new ways to improve safety and security at our campuses.
Standard Response Protocol
A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the classroom response to an incident at school. Weather events, fire, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by students, teachers, staff and administration.
LTISD is expanding its safety program to include the Standard Response Protocol. The SRP is based on these five actions: Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter and Hold. In the event of an emergency, the action and appropriate direction will be announced on the PA system.
Students and staff will be trained and the school will practice these drills over the course of the school year.
..........................................................................................................
Absences
Consistent school attendance is critical for the development of your child. When they miss school, we miss them! The entire school day is needed to deliver the full instructional program. Students need to come to school and attend the full day unless they have fever, a communicable disease, or family emergency. Help us communicate the importance of daily attendance to your child and schedule necessary appointments around school hours. When an absence is necessary, report the absence using Smart Tag. For questions regarding attendance concerns, please e-mail our Registrar, Irena Veliatos, at veliatosi@ltisdschools.org. A note explaining any absence is required upon the student’s return to school.
