English Language Arts - Mrs. Coble
This week in English Language Arts, we started a new writing unit, received new stems to work on, and began new books for guided reading and novel studies. I have met with a few reading groups so far and the students are really excited about starting the new books. We are reading and writing about immigration. Mrs. Hubbard’s social studies class is about to start their unit on immigration and the students have already began to read about it in ELA! It is so awesome. Our new writing unit is Research Writing. We are starting to organize our thoughts by asking questions, picking out great questions to research, then flash drafting about the topic of immigration. Flash drafting is a process where you start writing about a topic without stopping for a period of time. Students thought that they would not have much to write about. As you can see from one of the pictures in the collage, they had plenty to write about and were excited to realize that they knew more than they thought. During read to self, students are receiving articles to highlight, annotate and summarize. The articles are challenging, but rewarding as they dig deeper into understanding a new text. We are also discussing cause and effect, past, present and future verbs and verb agreement. I am so excited about this unit. The students are excited as well. Please talk to your child about their book project. We are down to two weeks until the due date of December 18th.
Mrs. Coble’s homeroom students brought home information, today, about our holiday party today. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Social Studies and Science - Mrs. Hubbard
This week students began reviewing for a Forces & Motion test that we took on Thursday. I was extremely pleased with how well they did when we reviewed the test in class on Tuesday and they did even better when we played Kahoot. We took the test in Canvas on the iPads, and I will grade them this weekend. There are some short answer questions that students had to fill in that I will have to grade individually. Students will received an email when their test is graded. We are already starting Properties of Matter and learning about the particles in solids, liquids, and gases. We did our first lab this week and students recorded the results in Notability and later turned it in through Canvas. A daily grade will be given for this assignment being completed correctly.
Students received a study guide on Monday for an upcoming Social Studies test on the Industrial Revolution. I would like to have a test on Friday of next week. We will discuss immigration this week (which Mrs. Coble has already started introducing in ELA) and finishing up our talks on labor union and child labor laws. The study guide is in Pages on their iPads and day users have a paper copy.
Notes about our homeroom Holiday/Christmas Party on Dec. 18th from 9:30-10:00 went home in Wednesday folders this week. Students wanted to sign up to bring different items. Right now we still need: Go-gurt, Little Debbie's, hot chocolate, bottled water, brownies, treat bags, 2-liter sodas. Of course, we don't have to have all of these items, but this is what is remaining off of the list that hasn't been fulfilled yet. I have games and activities planned for this day and you are welcome to join us. Fifth grade will be celebrating their parties with their own homerooms. You should have also received a note about our field trip coming up in January to the SC Aquarium in Charleston. Please send in the permission slip and $12.50 as soon as possible.
On Friday this coming week, we will have our Genius Hour Showcase. Please look for a note that went home with students today inviting you to come. It will be from 1:25-2:00 on Friday, December 11th. Come see what your child has been learning!
Math - Mrs. Harris
This week in math, students were challenged with one of the hardest skills we will learn all year long! The dreaded dividing fractions. This one skill confuses both children and adults. We laughed and joked as we learned that we should never divide people or cats. All that they have ever learned about division has been challenged; as they have learned that sometime when you divide numbers they actually appear to get bigger. Of course the only way to learn any tough skill is to make it fun. We really enjoyed a game of Splat and Bazinga. It’s funny how everyone does their homework when a game is involved. We also had lots of fun pretending to be Beyoncé and singing, “If you like it then you should have put a ONE on it.” Ask your child what this is all about. We will continue to practice this skill and have a test on Tuesday, December 15. We will complete test correction December 16 and an in class project that will count as a test grade on December 17. These are all great opportunities for students to make three very high grades to wrap up first semesters with high averages.
