OTSEGO LOCAL SCHOOLS
Superintendent's Weekly Update - March 18, 2016
Otsego Parents and Community Members:
The safety and welfare of our students and staff is our highest priority at the Otsego Local Schools. We practice safety drills throughout the year to help our students know what to do in an emergency. The Ohio Department of Education has recently changed the guidelines regarding emergency response drills. Otsego is required to have six emergency evacuation drills, three tornado drills, three school safety drills where students must be secured in the school building or rapidly evacuated in response to an immediate threat, and one theoretical school safety drill to provide faculty and staff with instruction in the procedures to follow in such situations.
The school district is working closely with the Wood County Sheriff’s Office to correctly implement these procedures. The goals of the training drills are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, reduce injuries, and communicate clear expectations for students and staff. These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency operation plans and improve our response skills.
On Thursday, March 24th, all buildings will be having a safety drill and will be evacuating to our off site locations. Each location is within walking distance. The evacuation safety drill will take place in the afternoon. We will also be having age appropriate conversations with our students before and after the drill. The conversations will be centered on a violent intruder. Teachers, building staff and students will have the option to evacuate, barricade, or use evasive distractions to get away from an armed intruder. (Run-Hide-Fight)

JH & HS STUDENT COUNCIL AND THE OTSEGO CLOTHING CLOSET
Dear Community Members,
Otsego Junior High School and High School Student Councils are working with the Otsego Clothing Closet to collect clothing for our community members. Otsego Clothing Closet is a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Ohio that provides clothing at no charge to families in need within the Otsego school district. They are currently in need of clothing donations of new and gently used clothing for all ages and sizes. Specifically, they are running low on clothing for JH and HS aged students.
Our Student Councils are excited to help collect donations, as we would like to help stock the Clothing Closet as well as opening The Knight’s Armory as a sister program to the Otsego Clothing Closet. The Knight’s Armory will be located in the high school for students in need to privately pick up clothing at no cost. We will be dividing all items donated between the Knight’s Armory and the Otsego Clothing Closet.
We will be accepting donations during the week of March 12th through 18th during the school day as well as at the musical each evening. You are welcome to drop off your donations at any time. Please leave donations in the main office of the High School, or see our Student Council members at the donation boxes at the opening of the musical each evening. Thank you for your continued support and your donations!

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT HIGHLIGHT
Senior Josh Ignatowski is in Cleveland this weekend. He and his robotics team ('Cat Attack' Team 451) will be participating in competitive matches. I have included a link that will be providing a live feed during this weekend's competition.
Josh is his team's "Coach". He earned that role by scoring the highest in a test about this year's gaming rules and from endorsements from all of the adult mentors in the group. He has the huge responsibility of leading the 'players' of the game in each match and advising them as it plays out! Very proud of this young man.
Josh's robotics team CAT ATTACK will be having matches at these times on Friday:
9:00, 10:58, 1:31, 2:51, 3:57, 5:10, 5:48

Pinwheels for prevention: As you may or may not be aware, April is Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month. Each year, Wood County Children’s Services participates in the Pinwheels for Prevention program that includes the planting of pinwheels that represents the number of investigations reported in Wood County the previous year. This year, the Pinwheels for Prevention event will be held on Wednesday, April 13th with a luncheon and silent auction being held at the Wood County Courthouse Atrium. The proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Wood County Children's Services donated funds. These funds are used to provide foster children with items that the state does not fund such as: prom dresses, senior pictures, sports equipment, musical instruments as well as the annual holiday party.
Children's Services is asking that everyone wear blue on this day in order to help raise awareness of Child Abuse and Neglect in our community. As part of the agency's fund raising efforts, the Children's Services unit will once again be selling Pinwheels for Prevention T-Shirts click here The agency is excited to see how many schools can fill their hallways with blue!
