This week in 7th grade ELA we finished our Dystopian Unit! As a class we finished reading The Giver and discussing deeper meaning within the reading. Students also completed associated comprehension work with the reading. On Tuesday and Thursday, students took their Winter MAPS test. These tests can be a tool to help provide information on areas of need for each student and class. I was excited to see so many improved scores from the Fall. We will take this one more time in the Spring. To finish our week, we played a review game to study for our Unit test, taken on Friday. Students also submitted their final copy of their dystopian short stories. I am so excited to read the finished product. Next week we will begin our new unit, poetry! Have a wonderful weekend!

Algebra wrapped up Module 7 with a quiz on Wednesday and Thursday. This was a tough module for some because it used so many previously learned skills. On Friday we began the first section of Module 9, Systems of Equations. In this chapter we will continue to use graphing and equation solving. This chapter will also see a lot of application problems. Encourage your student to get help as soon as they are experiencing trouble. Next week we will set goals and take the winter MAPS test for math. We are going to test during the middle of the week (Tuesday - Thursday). Please encourage getting enough sleep and eating a good breakfast. They also need to make sure that their Chromebooks are charged. Check Skyward for updated grades or missing work. Have a great weekend.

Please contact me via e-mail if you have any questions or concerns.

Social Studies News and Updates

John Johnsen john.johnsen@yorkville.k12.wi.us

This week in Social Studies, we examined how we gained the New Mexico Territories and California. We discussed how President Polk got Mexico to start the war so in the end when we won we could gain the new land. With this addition of land the United States had accomplished its goal of Manifest Destiny which was to connect the two oceans. We then started looking at the gold rush in California. Next week we will finish with the gold rush and take the test over Chapter 13 on Friday. Please encourage your child to study using their guided reading packet, self check quizzes in the book, and study guide. Have a great weekend. Mr. Johnsen

Spanish News and Updates

Katy Morrow katy.morrow@yorkville.k12.wi.us

This week in Spanish, students added to their list of school-related vocabulary by learning classroom objects (desk, door, stapler, window, etc.) Students practiced the new vocabulary using the verb tener = to have, but also learned about the verb necesitar = to need to describe what they needed for certain classes. Students are becoming more aware of sentence structure in Spanish and how to change verbs depending on who they are talking about. We finished the week by playing another round of verb ball to practice both pronouns and the verb necesitar. Next week, we will continue using vocabulary to make our school-unit conversation, that we will present in front of the class. Have a great weekend!

Physical Education and Health News and Updates

Amanda Peterson amanda.peterson@yorkville.k12.wi.us

This week the 7th graders learned all about peer refusal skills, which will help them avoid and escape situations in the future that involve tobacco, alcohol, and/or drugs. They also had the opportunity to practice using the peer refusal skills in the safe environment of our classroom by role playing and watching Tobacco Scenarios. We also reviewed a few Daily Fit Log concepts and the benefits of physical activity.

This week the seventh graders continued on with the Fitnessgram Winter Test Session. On Monday, we tested their cardiovascular endurance with the pacer test, on Wednesday we tested their flexibility with the sit and reach, and on Friday we concluded our testing with make-ups. While the students were not testing they increased their cardiovascular endurance by playing full court basketball, volleyball, and prison ball.

Have a wonderful weekend!
