Sherwood Spirit
January 2018
From Mr. Walerstein's Desk
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy New Year! Welcome back...we hope you had a restful and stress-free holiday with family and friends. While January represents a time for new beginnings, it is also a time to persevere and continue to work hard. For the second half of the school year, we have some exciting learning activities planned for our students.
This past month, we had some great activities for the students. Our music students performed at Islip MacArthur Airport, and we had our Winter Concert at Islip Middle School; the students did a phenomenal job and showed that all of their time and practicing was well worth it! Also in December, our 2nd graders had the opportunity to visit Brookhaven National Lab and learn about magnetism, animals, and engineering. Our 3rd graders had a visit from Sweetbriar Nature Center, and they got to have hands-on experiences with some critters.
Coming up in January, we have a number of different activities. Our 5th graders will be beginning their Too Good for Drugs curriculum; this is run by Youth Enrichment Services and teaches students about dangers of substance abuse and how to make positive decisions. Additionally the 5th graders will be visiting the Vanderbilt Planetarium and Museum.
Also this month, Officer Sabrina Pitch from the Suffolk County Community Relations Bureau will be doing several presentations on "Being Police Smart". The first informal presentation will be on January 3rd with our 4th and 5th graders to discuss appropriate technology usage. This will be followed up with an evening presentation on January 25th in the Islip Middle School Auditorium for students and parents. Our 2nd and 3rd graders will have a visit from Officer Pitch on January 23rd.
We also have several PTA events coming up next month. We hope you can join us at Islip Public Library for a presentation about the library services offered to the community.
Have a great month!
Warmest Regards,
Chad Walerstein
Principal

Throughout the year, the PTA will provide many programs and events for your kids that will be fun and educational. Your PTA membership helps fund these programs. It will also make sure that you stay up to date on PTA and other school events throughout the year. There are many opportunities to volunteer.
