From the Principal, Gwen Elder
Dear Parents,
The new semester is well underway at AMCHS, and we anticipate a spectacular 2020 throughout the spring. We are thankful for the achievements our students accomplished at A&M Consolidated High School--our students competed and surpassed their peers in many academic and extracurricular activities.
Our athletic programs competed successfully and earned titles beyond the district level. Tiger Tennis competed at the regional level and earned the Regional Quarterfinal Championship. Moreover, AMCHS Lady Tiger Swimming finished as District Champions, runner-up at the Regional championship, and seventh place as the State meet. Our wrestlers also continue to thrive. They won District Duals for the fifth consecutive year, finished first at the 10-5A Region meet, and nine wrestlers will compete at the State meet this upcoming weekend. Also, Tiger Basketball earned the Co-District Championship and will compete on Tuesday for the Bi-district title. Clearly, this is a testament to the quality of student-athletes who attend AMCHS.
Our fine arts programs feature many talented individuals who continue to flourish and perform at exceptional levels. Several students participated in the Texas Art Education Association Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) earlier in February, and four students’ art pieces were chosen to participate in Area. In our music education programs, a student in Tiger Band was selected to participate in the All-State Band and performed in San Antonio in February as part of the Texas Music Education Association (TMEA) Convention. Also, twenty students in Tiger Band qualified as All-Region participants—thirteen of whom qualified for All-Area Band. Our choral program has done remarkable, too. One of our talented students earned All-State. Finally, nine students in Orchestra were certified to record for Area.
The AMCHS Tiger Forensics Congressional Debate team earned the 5A State Championship for the third consecutive year. One of our students earned the state championship and the other student placed third overall. In Career & Technical Education, twenty-five Business Professionals of America students qualified to compete at the State Conference in Corpus Christi, TX in March. Also, two students who participated at the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) organization Region meet won first place and will compete at the State conference in April. Our SkillsUSA program is continuing the tradition of qualifying numerous students for the State level. Fifty-five students in SkillsUSA will be competing at the State level and pursuing an opportunity to advance to Nationals. Earlier this month, our FFA Radio Broadcasting team competed at the State competition. Furthermore, we recognized approximately 44% of our student body for earning A/B or all A Honor Roll during our annual Breakfast of Champions event last week.
The achievements our students have earned are a direct reflection of strong teachers, parental involvement, and an attitude of excellence that your child exhibits. This is a testament to the remarkable students at AMCHS who exemplify dedication, hard work, and greatness.
Sustaining a supportive environment is essential. Our students feel safe, supported, and cared for daily. We strive to establish positive relationships that are genuine and let students know that we care in all we do. Many students have been commended for their academic
achievement, exemplary attendance, leadership, consideration to others, upbeat attitude, and community service. Our aim is to recognize students for being responsible, honest, fair, and doing what is right. These values promote a positive atmosphere and aid in the development of successful young adults.
Let me encourage you to stay involved. Research shows that direct parental involvement impacts academic success. Educating your son or daughter, establishing positive relationships, sustaining a supportive environment, and using data to guide our decision making have been our areas of focus. Our teachers and support staff are available to help your son or daughter. Our goal is for ALL students to be successful in their own ways. We will continue to evaluate what we do to ensure ALL students learn at high levels. If at any time you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to share those issues with us.
Thank you for your continued support of AMCHS -- We Are Better Together.
Gwen Elder, Principal
A Reflection from A&M Consolidated High School’s Big Give: Prior to the Christmas break, A&M Consolidated High School teachers and staff were honored to attend the sixth annual Big Give at A&M Consolidated High School. Chicken Express, Taco Cabana, and Chicken Salad Chick donated gift cards/coupons to support this event. Above all, our PTO donated their time, energy, and Target gift cards (for every staff member at AMCHS) to make this day special. The faculty, staff, cafeteria workers, custodians, and administration were amazed by the love and support they received and honored by the kindness that was shown.
None of this would have been possible without your support.
With sincere gratitude and appreciation ~AMCHS Staff
From the Counselors' Office
The spring semester of 2020 has moved along very quickly, with students already selecting their courses for the 2020-21 school year.
On Friday, January 10, 9th-11th grade students received their course registration materials and an updated copy of their unofficial transcript. Counselors met with 9th and 10th grade students on January 14 and 15 to let students know what their counselors can help them with, explain the course registration process in detail, and to answer any questions that students had. Course registration forms were turned in to the counseling office on Friday, January 17 and the counselors met with every student individually January 21-30 in grades 9-11 to review their course registration and five year plans. The counselors met with current 8th grade students at the middle schools on February 4. Welcome to The Jungle took place on Monday, February 10 and counselors will return to the middle schools on February 19-21 to meet with 8th grade students and finalize their course choices.
Students needing CTE applications received those from their counselors when they met with them January 21-30. CTE applications need to be completed and turned in to the counseling office by Friday, February 14. Students that wish to waive into courses for which they were not recommended will need to have their parents sign and submit a waiver. The waiver process is now handled on-line and the electronic submission form can be found on the AMCHS Counseling website.
This is a very important process that will affect your students next year and will help to determine future staffing and scheduling needs at AMCHS. Please take time with your student to carefully consider all course options. Feel free to call or email your students’ counselors if you have questions.
The deadline for a change in course requests is Friday, June 12. Please mark this on your calendar! The only changes made for the 2020-2021 school year after June 12 will be those regarding summer school course completion and coach/director lists for teams and other programs.
The 4th six weeks grading period will end on Friday, February 21 and report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, February 26. Parents should review fall grades to see if their student needs to take credit recovery, night school, summer school, or a CBE (credit by exam) for a course that was not passed during the fall. Summer School information will be available in late April.
Seniors should have received letters in December 2019 indicating courses that they need to graduate in May 2020. Juniors should have received letters in early January indicating courses that they need for graduation in May 2021. If you have any concerns or questions about your Senior or Junior, please contact their counselor. Seniors should be checking our website and others for scholarships and should be logging in to the FAFSA website (FAFSA.gov) now and working on financial aid for college.
Brazos Valley College Night took place at the Texas A&M RELLIS Campus on Wednesday, January 22. This was a new venue for this event and the turnout was incredible. We look forward to working with other area high schools to plan for and make this event happen again next year.
Counselors will meet with all Juniors during advocate on Wednesday, March 4 in the auditorium to discuss the process for applying to college including registering for the SAT / ACT, applying for financial aid, admissions deadlines for different colleges, and other options for life after high school. We will post the Junior presentation to our website after we meet with them.
Contact the AMCHS Counseling office at 979-764-5510 with any questions and always check the AMCHS Counseling webpage (https://amchscounseling.weebly.com/) for updates.
