Building Bridges NOT Fences!
Once a month we host a coffee with the principals to help connect with parents and build a bridge between Hackberry and the community. We know that this is a vital step in student success. At the end of each session I give parents an opportunity to ask questions about about anything and everything as it pertains to Hackberry! This week we had several discussions about communication and the use of DOJO. Most parents love DOJO and the instant feedback it is giving parents. Some parents had concerns about only getting negative feedback or very little use from the teacher with this communication tool.
Here is a few requirements I have for every teacher moving forward.
1. Three positives to every one negative (We have to communicate the positives as much as we communicate the negative) Remember these children are someones most precious treasure and with any parent it is difficult to hear negative things about them, but we love to hear the positive. It's easier to hear about my child in a negative light if I also know that the teacher I'm entrusting my child to also sees the good in them as well! In doing this we are building bridges and not putting up fences!
2. Minimum of three communications a week with each parents---That can be a class message to all your parents at the same time. Communication is key!
3. If you have a negative message either through DOJO, email, phone call or in person (My preference is a phone call or in person) it has to begin with a positive. When you start any of these with a negative message you lose the parent.
4. Remember DO NOT TAKE IT PERSONAL...We cannot control our parents, but we can control our we respond and act.

Classroom Strategy of the Week
Set logical rules and consequences.
Keep the goal of learning in mind and make sure students know why the rules are what they are: “We walk instead of running in the hallway because we want to make sure that everyone is safe.” And fit the consequence to the crime: If a student makes a mess of the art supplies, the logical consequence is to clean it up. Arbitrary punishments like losing recess, or something else unrelated to the offense, teach students that you are mean and trying to force a power struggle.

Hackberry Parent Support!
We are also working to secure a classroom mom for each class. The mom will be responsible for organizing class parties and supporting you with all your needs. As you see parents on our campus make them feel part of the family and thank them for their help. This is a major shift and we need parents supporting our school!
