Beto

"Falling in love with life."

Beto's life and hardships before he was born.

Beto had lost his brother before he was even born and his mother had been going through a hard time since. Every time his mother had gone to work, betos brother Fredy was left with Gloria, his mothers friend. Gloria threatened his mother of violence to keep Fredy because Gloria had thought Beto’s mother was a horrible parent and that she was not taking good care of him. They didn’t see Fredy until three years ago, by then he was 27, he was in gangs and was taking drugs.

When his mother lost Fredy, before Beto was born, she had become “messed up” and had a huge problem with alcohol. Beto’s mother could also never manage money well, so her other children never respected her and always criticized her, and soon had left her.

Children Beto's age.

Most of the kids Beto’s age joined gangs or even fought in the wars, but he had not joined gangs or fought in the war. He thought that he could have a good life, and he did not want to waste his life on fighting and being in gangs.

After they lost Fredy Beto’s mother had brought home this boy named German to live in their house. Beto still doesn't know where she found him or how they met, but she adored him anyways. German was 9 when Beto was born and he tortured and beat Beto and his sister Milena. As a teenager German began to steal, first from his own house then from the neighbors. About 8 years ago German was sent to Bela Vista Jail.

Beto's life at school.

When Beto went to school, he would do anything to cause trouble. Like he would shove cockroaches in kids faces, he called everyone names, talked in class, laughed out loud for no reason, and pretty much anything to make nuisance of himself. The teachers despised Beto and his actions, which Beto wanted the most.

Return of German

After a short while German had come back from Bela vista Jail when Beto turned 10. Prison had made him much worse and Betos life had become a nightmare. He beat, tormented Beto and Milena worse than before. German had threatened Beto and Milena if they told their mother. So Beto and Milena kept getting tortured by German while Beto’s mother kept loving German more and more each day unaware of the nightmare Beto and Milena are in.

One night, Beto was 15, German wanted to go to sleep, but Beto was up studying. They had fought about turning on the light or turning it off. Then, after a few minutes of arguing German said, “So, you really want me to stick the knife in, do you? You want me to stab you?” Suddenly, Beto had enough with German and all of his actions, so Beto picked up German and threw him against the wall. “I hit him with anything and everything i could lay my hands on. I hit him for every time he had terrorized me and made my life a misery. I hit him for attacking me and my sister when we were too young and weak to protect ourselves. I hit him with every shred of power I possessed until my brother and sister pulled me away.” Beto said. Then Beto’s mother found what German had been doing to Beto and Milena, and threw German out immediately.

Beto's transformation from troubled kid to a hero

Beto had enough of this and had wanted to make change in the way everyone lived and all of the hardships people went through. Beto had joined a theater group with a bunch of adults, and soon found out what was going on at home was happening all around him and he didn't even notice. Beto wanted to change the lives of many others so they did not have to suffer the way he did. That is what caused him to want to fight for change.

Beto's first steps to becoming a hero

He decided to start helping out at a local church. Beto had become an altar boy at the church at San Francisco De Assisi that is on the border of the Barrios of La Libertad and Caicedo. “It was by far the grandest building in our community soaring over the small cement houses with a high arched doorway and a towering spire. Inside it was cool and dark. Light filtered through the narrow windows and lay in stripes across the pews, the altar and the confession booths.” Beto had described the church, or his getaway.

How Beto changed other peoples lives

Beto has been in the peace movement for about 5 years, and runs a child rights group which is where he trains kids to teach others about their rights. He also works with a group adolescents in a nearby barrio. He challenged the stereotype of any group of young people being thieves or murders. Beto and his group work with no funds and entirely on their own. He believes that if they try hard enough, they can transform their communities and maybe the war.
