CASS CORNER

Resource Highlight: Glade Valley Community Services
This week, we’re looking at another resource: Glade Valley Community Services. Glade Valley Community Services, or GVCS, is an organization that is local to Walkersville. Their focus is meeting the needs of families in the Walkersville, Woodsboro, and overall Glade Valley area. GVCS only supports families within the Walkersville feeder school, which means that the resources are focused directly on our school community.
Glade Valley Community Services was created in 2003 as an umbrella organization to coordinate community outreach efforts in the Walkersville and Woodsboro area. They operate a number of initiatives throughout the year. We’ll highlight each of those below:
Back to School Project: https://gladevalley.org/back-to-school-project/
GVCS collects donations of school supplies throughout the year which they then distribute directly to the Walkersville feeder schools so that their counseling departments can provide them to students in need.
Emergency Relief Fund: https://gladevalley.org/emergency-relief-fund/
The emergency relief fund is a financial assistance program to help with basic necessities for families. Eligibility is based on location as well as financial situation for specific families and needs. They can help with utilities, some prescription costs, medical bills, and occasional rent assistance. Funds are paid directly to the provider rather than to the family. These are considered on a case-by-case basis, and limited to a certain amount of funds per family.
Food Bank: https://gladevalley.org/food-bank/
The Glade Valley Food Bank is GVCS’s largest program. They offer baked goods, meats, produce, and kitchen staples. The food bank serves households and individuals from the greater Glade Valley area. They operate as curbside pickup only, and are housed at the Walkersville Town Hall.
The food bank hours are Mondays 6:30pm to 7:30pm and Thursdays 1pm to 3pm. It’s located at 21 West Frederick Street, Walkersville, MD 21793.
Holiday Toy Shoppe: https://gladevalley.org/holiday-toy-shoppe/
The Holiday Toy Shoppe is an annual program run by GVCS. Through the generosity of community members and local organizations, it serves to provide holiday gifts for children who may not otherwise be able to access such gifts.
Families can apply annually in October, and those approved will participate in distribution during the first week of December. Usually these include 2 outfits with winter gear and undergarments and three toys per child, or gift cards, sweatshirts, and books for older children. They include extras when they can as well.
In 2022, their program supported 65 families consisting of 226 children ages 0-18.
Thrift Shop: https://gladevalley.org/thrift-shop/
GVCS operates a Walkersville Community Thrift Shop, located in the basement of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Parish Hall. It is at 19 West Pennsylvania Avenue in Walkersville, and is open on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. They sell clothing for $3.00 per bag, coats for $1.00 each, and shoes are offered for free.
Educational Assistance Fund: https://gladevalley.org/educational-assistance-fund/
Finally, GVCS operates The Peg and Orley Bourland Educational Assistance Fund. This is a scholarship program specifically focused on need-based funding for trade or technical fields and school programs.
To be eligible for this fund, applicants must live in the Walkersville school feeder area, must show financial need, career goals, and be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary program. Preference is given to those in a trade field, not a 4 year degree. Applications can be submitted year-round for this program.
As you can see, Glade Valley Community Services provides a substantial amount of support to families in our community. There are several programs that are available for families to access. You can find them at https://gladevalley.org/. They can also be reached by phone at 301-845-0213, by email at gvcs.inc@verizon.net, and through their “Contact Us” form on their website.
Mrs. Wilt is the CASS Coordinator assigned to Walkersville schools. Her office is located at New Midway Elementary School this year, but she can often be found around Walkersville High as she coordinates with students and staff. If you have any questions or would like Mrs. Wilt to reach out to you or your family for assistance, you can email her at Samantha.Wilt@fcps.org or call her at 240-236-1421. If you would like to see a certain topic featured in the CASS Corner, please reach out to Mrs. Wilt.
