Quarter Two in IH & IB courses and what to expect

Our IH and IB teachers have completed acourse information spreadsheet to let you know what your child will be doing in Quarter 2 and how reflection (an IB value) is incorporated into their classes. For more detailed information, visit their faculty websites and Google classrooms.

Internal Assessment Calendar

As you likely are aware, all IB courses (grades 11 & 12 only) have internal assessments in addition to the May tests. We have created a calendar of these internal due dates and have also added core (TOK, CAS, EE) deadlines into one document. This document is also available on our website: pisd.edu/ib

Mentoring Program

This year we have a mentoring program that involves 460 students at all grade levels. When matching students, we considered their schedules and also their interests -- a change from our 2018 process. Currently 147 freshman have mentors, 97 sophomores have mentors, and some of our sophomores are also mentoring freshman. Please encourage your child to be actively involved in this important relationship -- we have heard great things from students who have forged solid friendships through our mentoring initiative!

IB Testing Fee Deposit Due (juniors and seniors only)

An IB testing fee deposit of $100 is due on or before November 1, 2019. All students should have received invoices. Please check (and double-check!) that this document is correct because there is a penalty fee to change registration after November 15.

The directions below were printed on your child's invoice.

The Extended Essay

Dr. Bissett, our EE coordinator, met with all juniors this week through their IB English 3 classes. She explained the extended essay and gave myriad information/handouts to our juniors. Please begin discussing this assignment with your 11th grade students- they should currently be formulating an original research question and creating a written proposal before seeking an advisor. The IB recommends (though doesn't require) that students write their EE in one of their HL subjects.

If you are the parent of a 9th or 10th grade student, it is too early for your student to begin writing but not too early for him/her to begin thinking about areas of interest. Some students even like to keep a log of possible EE topics - beginning in 9th grade!

For more information about the extended essay, visit https://www.pisd.edu/Page/18972.

Enjoy this video from Tim Urban:

"Tim Urban knows that procrastination doesn't make sense, but he's never been able to shake his habit of waiting until the last minute to get things done. In this hilarious and insightful talk, Urban takes us on a journey through YouTube binges, Wikipedia rabbit holes and bouts of staring out the window -- and encourages us to think harder about what we're really procrastinating on, before we run out of time."
