Oakhurst Elementary
March 18, 2021
From the Principal
We are excited about the opportunity to bring more students back for in-person learning for the final six weeks of school. We are in the process of contacting all virtual families to learn their preferences. We are committed to minimizing teacher changes for virtual and in-person students where possible. We hope to finalize rosters and communicate to families by the end of next week.
Principal Sanders
Virtual Flybrary Tomorrow
Due to today's school-wide virtual schedule, Flybrary pickup and drop off will be held tomorrow, Friday, March 18 from 8:30 - 11:00 at the back door (right outside the media center near the back parking lot - NOT the courtyard).
Think First, Stay Safe
Dear Parents:
As previously announced, Ms. Deming has started delivering live lessons this week of the personal safety and abuse prevention curriculum called Think First, Stay Safe. These lessons are being provided for every student in grades K thru 5 in Decatur and it is vitally important that your child log on during their normal times with Ms. Deming. I've included the specific schedule for the lessons.
Ms. Deming would appreciate it if you would email her if your child is out due to illness. And, she is happy to answer your questions about the curriculum or schedule. Her email address is ldeming@csdecatur.net.
Thanks very much,
Principal Sanders
It’s Oakhurst Yearbook Time!!
This is certainly a year to remember! Please help us create a meaningful remembrance by supporting the 2020-2021 Oakhurst Yearbook in the following ways:
PAY FOR YEARBOOKS:
Books will be ordered for EVERY student and staff member, but to cover the cost, we need your help. Pay online at https://oakhurstelementarypta.org/. Go to “Store” then click the “Yearbook” link. There are options on the Yearbook Store page for Yearbook and Dedication payments, as well as to make an optional donation.
PURCHASE A DEDICATION ($10 each for SECOND-GRADE families only):
A yearbook dedication is the perfect way to say something special to your second-grader as they prepare to move up from Oakhurst. Each dedication will be approximately 1/10th of a page and will consist of a photo (that you provide) and up to 50 words or 260 characters. Order your dedication at the Yearbook payment site: https://oakhurstelementarypta.org/. Go to “Store” then click the “Yearbook” link. DEADLINE FOR DEDICATIONS is APRIL 2!
GET YOUR PICTURES IN THE YEARBOOK!
If your child did not have an individual portrait taken by the school photographer, please send a photo of your child that we can use on their classroom page!
Also, if you have photos of school activities (virtual learning activities, first day of in-person school, playing with friends safely, etc.) that you would like to have considered for inclusion in the yearbook, email them to oakhurstyearbook@gmail.com or send a link to a shared folder that we can access. Please send no more than 4 photos per student and include the names and grade levels of students pictured in the photos. Photos will be accepted through April 2.
Note: The Yearbook Staff will review all photos and determine final yearbook content. We cannot guarantee that all submissions can be used in the book.
Please contact the yearbook team with any questions at oakhurstyearbook@gmail.com. Thank you!
From the Oakhurst Equity Team
As previously mentioned, weekly we will provide a preview of crew content for the upcoming week. Each week you will see the learning target and the anchor text.

The Tour deCatur is Coming Up on March 27th!
Has your family registered yet for the Run Where You Are Tour deCatur 5K and Fun Run? You can still sign up at www.tourdecatur.com. The elementary students who register for the Fun Run will receive a Zoom link to warm up and cool down with some of the elementary school coaches! You can download race bibs from the site or create your own and WIN A FREE BUTTER & CREAM ICE CREAM CONE! That’s right: make your own race bib and post a photo of it on Facebook or Instagram with #Tourdecatur2021, and you’ll receive a gift certificate for a free ice cream. Register today for a fun family activity that supports #OurKids! Want another reason to run on Saturday, March 27th? We heard that the Easter Bunny will be riding around Decatur in a fire truck that day! Be on the lookout!
DEF Needs Mentors!
We have an immediate need for two women mentors for our REACH mentoring program. If you or someone you know is looking to give back to their community in a fundamental way, mentoring a student 2-4 hours a month is a great way to do that. For more information, please visit www.decatureducationfoundation.org/mentoring or contact Marie@decatureducationfoundation.org to sign up.
From Decatur Farm to School
SAVE THE DATE! Wednesday, April 21st, will be Decatur Farm to School’s Spring Take Out! Order from participating restaurants during their open hours and a portion of your order total will go to DF2S! Proceeds from the Spring Take Out support our DHS student summer internships, Decatur kitchen staff training, conference scholarships for students and teachers, taste tests, and school gardens - just to name a few. Give yourself a break, eat a delicious meal, and support a fabulous cause!
