From the Principal's Pen
Middletown Families,
Spring is a busy time of the year, and I appreciate the involvement of families in so many school activities the last several weeks. Thanks for your participation in school-wide fundraiser, the APEX Fun Run. Our school profited more than $7,400, which will be used for student activities, incentives, supplies, and technology. We held our first annual Middletown Talent Show, and our students did an incredible job showcasing their talents. They were so brave and performed a wide range of acts, which showed how brilliant they truly are. Way to go, Bulldogs! We still have many more activities over the next few weeks, such as our choir summer concert in the park on May 19. I hope to see you there!
Most of our fifth-grade students have successfully defended their transition-readiness to middle school by completing student defenses. Their defenses outlined how they are prepared and resilient learners, globally and culturally competent citizens, emerging innovators, effective communicators, and productive collaborators. Students have finished the spring round of the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing, and teachers are using this information to inform their instruction for the last semester. Intermediate students are preparing for the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP) assessment, which will be administered from May 20 through 28. Also, please note that our fifth-grade promotion ceremony has been moved to June 5 and will be held at Middletown Christian Church at 6:30 p.m.
Thanks again to our families, Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and community for donating time, money, and resources to our community. It is through your generosity and involvement that Middletown is able to truly thrive. As we prepare for perhaps our busiest month of the year, I look forward to seeing you around and celebrating the growth of your child throughout this school year.
Sincerely,
Justin Matson

Respecting Diversity
By Dr. John and Jane Covey
Today more than ever children interact with people of differing ethnicities, religions, and cultures. Their circle of friends, their schoolmates, and their athletic teams are much more diverse than those of even a generation ago. The person who learns to be open to differences will have more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life. Your child's success depends on being able to understand, appreciate, and include others.
Parents who understand the 7 Habits come to realize that the 7 Habits encourage and welcome inclusiveness and respect for diversity as well as having integrity to one’s own beliefs:
Habit 1: Be Proactive You’re in Charge: Take responsibility for your thoughts and actions.
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind Have a Plan: Know what you want and what you value and believe.
Habit 3: Put First Things First Work First, Then Play: Live by your values and beliefs.
Habit 4: Think Win-Win. Everyone Can Win: Think mutual benefit with others.
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. Listen Before You Talk: Seek to understand others and to be understood by others.
Habit 6: Synergize Together is Better: Creatively cooperate with others.
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. Balance Feels Best: Continuously renew your body, brain, heart, and soul.
When parents encourage learning and living the 7 Habits they are teaching their children to respect diversity while always acting with integrity to their own principles and values.

K-PREP TEST (dates: Monday, May 20; Tuesday–Thursday, May 22–24; Tuesday, May 28. Make-up days will be May 29–31 and June 3).
Dear Parent/Guardian. The teachers and staff have been working very hard this year providing instruction and working with students to get them to the next level of their education and learning. The time has come for our students to shine and show the world what they know and what they can do! I have been visiting classrooms and providing some guidance with tips/strategies to help students prepare and calm their nerves as they take on this important challenge. We want your child’s testing experience to be positive and successful. Here are some suggestions that you can do to help ease your child’s testing anxiety:
Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest (at least 8 to 10 hours is what research recommends). Make sure his or her electronic devices are turned off during bedtime.
Have your child eat a healthy breakfast at home or in the cafeteria at school.
Make sure your child arrives at school on time. (Students can be dropped off as early as 8:30 a.m. and class begins at 9:05 a.m.) Students who arrive late will have to wait in a holding room until their classmates are finished, and then they will make up the missed test. Therefore, arriving at school on time is very important.
Gently encourage your child to do his or her best.
Write an encouraging note for your child letting him or her know how proud you are of them and that you believe in them.
Thank you for your help and support.

Kindergarten Welcome Night
Do you know any Middletown families who will have a kindergartner next year? Spread the word: on Thursday, May 23, from 5 to 6 p.m., Middletown incoming kindergarten families are invited to visit our school. Incoming kindergarten families can come tour the school, see kindergarten classes, receive information regarding registration, learn about a typical kindergarten day, get ideas about what families should be working on the summer before starting kindergarten and have questions answered. We look forward to meeting our new Bulldog families.
