Science Showcase - Thursday, March 14
The 9th Annual Science Showcase was spectacular last night at the high school. It featured our own Super Kindergarten and First Grade students. Kindergarten students were excited to show off the 3-D shapes they had built using our 3-D printer (marshmallows and toothipicks, Magna Tiles, clay and more). First graders showcased their reports about Ohio animals and habitats that featured a 3-D printed animal model. Special thanks to Mrs. Stenger, Ms. Bentley, Ms. Stephenson and all parents and students who attended last night's event!
Inside the Idea Lab with Mrs. Stephens
This week in Idea Lab we cheered on our favorite books as we discovered the results of round one of the March Book Madness tournament. Not one bracket from third, fourth, or fifth grade remained perfect after round one; even Mrs. Stephens and Mrs. Bender did not guess them all correctly. We did have several students who got 7 of the 8 matches correct, which is pretty amazing! All grades voted online today in the Elite 8 round. The competition is heating up and the students are excited! If you were in the building you likely heard the loud cheers and disappointed exclamations at the beginning of each class today. It is fantastic to see the students so invested in reading.
Today second through fifth grades also spent time using Tumblebooks via the Library/Media Center link on the Mayfield Schools home page. If you have never taken advantage of this, please try it out at home. Tumblebooks are free e-books that have been partially animated and are accompanied by a voice-over reading of the book, so even early and pre-readers can easily follow along. To access the many free books (as well as associated videos with educational content), go to mayfieldschools.org, hover over the “student” category on the far right, then click on the second link, which is “Library Media Centers.” On the next page you will need to click on “Elementary Library Resources,” which will take you to a page with all the elementary schools on it. Scroll down to the Gates Mills Elementary area and click on “Tumblebooks.”
Kindergarten and first graders focused on checking out Dr. Seuss books today in honor of his recent birthday. After voting and book checkout, they were also able to do some other activities such as Magna-tiles or Legos. Something very exciting happened at the end of the day: our new interactive big-screen TV arrived! We can’t wait to try it out! We also received a shipment of new books today with lots of great new titles, many of which were already checked out. Many thanks to the Gates Mills Garden Club for their donation of funds to purchase horticulture or environmental themed books. We chose a set of four books illustrated by the late Ohio nature artist Charlie Harper. Keep reading and trying out new technology, and we’ll see you in the Idea Lab!
