WIZARD WEEKLY
Week of February 13th-17th
WORD FROM THE EMERALD CITY
~ We are on the countdown to spring break. The weather keeps changing, and with that can come some spring fever in both students and teachers! Hang in there!! We are almost there, and you guys are doing a great job!
~ Shout out to Bobby for getting both STAAR training as well as TELPAS training completed last week! Also, we appreciate him changing the calibration training to allow you guys to complete the training on our 1/2 day! Thanks, Bobby!!
~ I know stress is high, and kids can try our patience, but please remember if you need to vent, de-stress or work through anything, make sure to do it behind closed doors where students can't see or hear. We don't want students to feel any of our stresses. They try hard and do their best, and sometimes we can forget that their best may not be exactly where we want it to be, but we meet them where they are and continue to push them to make progress. Progress is what we want! Remember, it's not all about the test, even though sometimes we feel like it is. Keep in mind that you all do great things for kids and making them smile each day is just as important as teaching them a new skill.
~ Don't forget to turn in your nominations for Professional, Auxiliary, and Paraprofessional of the Year. Those will be due on the 22nd. Also, those teachers who were nominated for Teacher of the Year, please submit your reflection forms to my by the 22nd as well. I'm still looking for one more teacher for the committee. Right now, I have 3 who have volunteered, and I need one more classroom teacher. Let me know if you can help!
~ Donuts with Dads is this Friday, and it looks like we will have a big turnout! I hope the kiddos are excited to come and share some time with their dads/grandpa/uncle, whoever!
~ Encourage students to bring in books for the book drive. I will try to remember to announce each morning as well!
~ Christine has made a Makerspace "wish list" and the box is located outside the Makerspace room. Make sure to stop by and take a look to see what is needed! One section in there will be a craft area, so we will always be on the hunt for extra craft supplies (think pipe cleaners, puff balls, popsicle sticks, toilet paper rolls, etc.)
Campus News
~Encourage your students to sell the chocolate! This is our biggest fundraiser, and we want PTA to make as much money as possible!
~ We have scheduled the remainder of the grade levels who still needed to participate in the ICLE walks, and I have updated those dates below. I am giving feedback to teachers as it is given, so if we walk into your classroom, I will most likely send you a quick email or grab you for just a quick refection of what was seen and discussed, just so we all continue to grow and learn from each other.
~ We will have the Chili potluck this Friday in the lounge! Make sure to sign up on the sheet on the door in the lounge! Thanks to Sunshine Committee for organizing the event!!
~ Since we have a 1/2 day next Friday, we WILL have clubs this Friday. So, once again, we will be on clubs schedule.
~I hope you all enjoyed the spirit rally on Friday! It was so fun to see the students so excited. I hated to have to leave early, but Leslie and I went to watch William in the spelling bee at Boswell. He did GREAT! He made it to the 4th round, and there were only 7 kiddos remaining. A student from Creekview was the overall winner. We are so proud of him and how he represented Elkins!
~ For February, we will be focusing on the life principles of common sense, courage, self-discipline, and service. I will begin announcing them tomorrow during morning announcements. These are the traits to be used when looking for your February elks of the month!
~ We will be having a movie night on February 24th. This will be sponsored by our Elk Junior Council. The forms are going home today.. There will be a concession stand selling pizza, baked goods, and drinks that will also be sponsored by Elk Junior Council. We do want to stress to students that this IS NOT a drop off and leave event. If students come, they must have a parent/guardian stay with them. It does say this on the invitation, but please stress it to students as well. I will try to be standing at the door to ensure parents are accompanying their kiddos.
~ Math/Science Night are right around the corner! March 6th will be here before we know it! Patty and Courtney are working to get everything organized for that. Please plan to attend this night, as it's normally one of our most well-attended events. We will also be having a LiiNK informational meeting at 5:45 for parents in LiiNK grade levels as well.
Be Vocabulous!
Continue to discuss the vocabulary with your students! It's making a big difference!
Here is the copy of the s'more newsletter about the vocabulary program. It has all the words listed for the year, so you can plan ahead! It has each word listed and the grade level responsible. The kids really enjoyed this last year, and I think this was something I had more comments from parents about than anything! They would comment about their students knowing the meanings of words that they didn't even know. The vocabulary parade was a big hit too. Even the older kids got into it and had fun being creative and participating.
Please turn in the "Word Up" Levels sheets when you have students who display the appropriate use of the words. Obviously, the younger they are, the more "adaptation" needs to occur in order to receive the levels, but the students who received the tags last year, LOVED it!! I will put the "Word Up Level" sheet on canvas!
As a reminder, the way the "Word Up Levels" work, goes like this...
All students will start as rookies and all students will have a chance to move up as many levels as they would like. Spirit Tags (that PTA is selling) will be used for levels 2 thru 5 and when a student reaches level 2 thru 5 they will receive a spirit tag for that level from the principal.
Teachers will nominate students to move up through the levels.
