NEWS FROM PSD
Recognizing mental health, this month and always
May 2, 2023
Dear Poudre School District community,
We are in the final stretch of the school year, and that means (hopefully) sunnier weather for field days, concerts and competitions, final exams and graduation ceremonies. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month.
Over the next five weeks, we will share research-backed information and personal stories from PSD mental health professionals and students. We are grateful for their expertise and perspectives, as we work to increase awareness of mental health resources and reduce the stigma around needing and seeking help. Check out www.psdschools.org and upcoming editions of the PSD Now newsletter, and follow PSD on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Mental Health and Belonging, one of PSD’s strategic priorities, is about promoting emotional wellbeing and healthy connections among students’ friends, classmates, and adults in their lives. Research shows that students who report having better mental health experience increased academic, social and emotional success.
The need for mental health support in our community is significant, and no one person or organization can address it alone. PSD continues to strengthen and expand our partnerships with the goals of increasing access to mental health professionals, creating spaces of belonging, and equipping students with skills to support their own mental health. Just this past weekend, a cohort of the 2023 Leadership Fort Collins class and the Alliance for Suicide
Prevention of Larimer County teamed up to host three suicide-prevention classes. Those who attended join hundreds of others in our community who have skills to literally save lives.
It’s OK to not be OK: If you need to talk to someone, you may consider:
- PSD mental health professionals
- PSD has hundreds of professionals committed to this work, from school counselors, psychologists and mental health specialists to school nurses and social workers.
Don’t know where to start? Counselors are the connectors within their schools, providing direct support and referring students and parents/guardians to other mental health resources, within and outside PSD.
Call your school’s front office to be connected.
- 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress and crisis resources for your loved ones
- Text or call 988 to talk with a trained counselor
- Help in Spanish: 988lifeline.org/help-yourself/en-espanol
- Info for people who are deaf and hard of hearing: 988lifeline.org/help-yourself/for-deaf-hard-of-hearing
- Website: 988lifeline.org/
- Youth get up to six free virtual counseling sessions (some in-person appointments available too).
- Websites: imattercolorado.org/ or yoimportocolorado.org/ (la versión en Español)
Northern Colorado Resource Guide
Not sure what you may need or who can help? Being well-resourced in basic needs, such as food, clothing and housing, all support mental well-being. This guide has information to help find programs to support basic needs, as well as crisis counseling, substance use and abuse
PSD is sharing this guide as a community service; making it publicly available does not constitute an endorsement of any business, organization, or resource.

Thank you for your continued partnership.
Sincerely,
Poudre School District
Support Students Experiencing Homelessness
The number of PSD families and youth experiencing homelessness has risen by 10% since last year, and their needs have risen exponentially. Currently, one out of every 27 students is experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity in our district. Students experiencing homelessness encounter many barriers to their education. Our department works to help youth and families overcome these barriers, including transportation, access to extracurricular activities, before and after-school care, and meeting basic needs. We do this along with case-management to help them reach independence.
Your generous donation allows the Language, Culture and Equity Department to support these students and families with personal items, temporary shelter, provisions, clothing, etc.
The need has never been greater.
Please help us reach our goal of raising $40,000 to support PSD students and families facing housing insecurity and homelessness.
*All donations are tax deductible, and an automated email will provide you with your tax receipt.

You can now easily donate via this link: All donations are tax deductible. Please share this message far and wide, anyone can donate through this link. The opportunity to give does not end now, this link will be live throughout the holiday season.
PSD Now Newsletter
One of many ways information is shared is through the PSD Now community newsletter, which features timely information about the latest happenings in the district. This is emailed to families and interested community members about every other Thursday.
FREE & REDUCED MEAL PROGRAM
It’s not too late to apply for the Free & Reduced Meal Program for this school year. By doing so your student’s approval to the program carries over for the first 30 days of next school year. Also, there are advantages to being on this program with discounts given throughout our community for student summer programs. Check out fcgov.com/reducedfee website for more information. The before and after school program, AlphaBest, also gives a 15% discount. Apply on-line at www.myschoolapps.com. Please note that August 1, 2022 is the first day you can apply on line for the 2022-2023 school year. Families do have to apply each school year unless they receive a letter stating otherwise.
