THE MEDICAL ARTS COME TO FLORENCE
When Anne Royall was making her fabled visits to Florence in the early 1820's, she noted with astonishment the unusually high number of medical doctors resident in the fledgling town. So, interestingly, citizens of Florence seem, from the town's very beginning, to have placed an emphasis on the need for competent medical care. Some doctors practiced medicine from their homes, while a few had separate clinics. With smallpox a terrifying presence in those early years, City leaders established a pest house ("pest" as a shortened form of "pestilence" in this case) on the banks of Cypress Creek. Those who contracted this deadly disease were required to live in that facility. A historic marker exists today very near the site of the house. It was not until 1919 that Florence established a hospital, thanks to a generous donation by Camilla Madding Coffee (Mrs. Alexander Donelson Coffee) in memory of her daughter, Eliza Croon Coffee, who died at the age of 25. Thus was born Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital (ECM), first located on the southeast corner of Tuscaloosa and Walnut Streets in downtown Florence.
