7th Grade Band News

Week of October 4

Fall Concert-Tuesday, October 5

We are so excited to finally be able to present a concert for the first time since February of 2020. Here are the details:

When: Tuesday, October 5, 2021at 7:30pm ***please note this has changed from the originally scheduled time of 7pm. We pushed it back 30 minutes to accommodate sports schedules.

Where: Prairie View Gymnasium

Who: Prairie View 6th and 7th grade bands

When do students need to be there? Students should report to the gym by 7:00 pm

What do I wear? There is no band uniform this year. Students should dress nicely for concerts. Please avoid clothing that has rips, tears or holes. Please also make sure that any writing on shirts is school appropriate.

Student Attendance: Concerts are an extension of the band classroom and the learning that takes place every day. Music was created to be shared and not performed in isolation (or in the band room only). For this reason, we need to perform for an audience in order to share the wealth of learning that has taken place. This sharing helps the students to bring closure to the learning process and also propels them towards the next step in the journey.

Student participation in concerts is vital to the success of all the students involved. Please make every effort to have your child be a part of these experiences. If you have a reason to miss any performance, please contact your teacher as soon as possible prior to the concert date.

Other important details: Masks will be required of all audience members and we will encourage social distancing whenever possible.

Concert Seating

Since the fall concert will take place in the gym, audience seating will be on the bleachers. Please see the diagram of the concert setup below to help you determine where to sit while students warm up.

Additionally, we ask that the ground area in front of the bleachers is kept clear to allow student musicians and audience members with disabilities room to sit.

Big picture

Fall Concert Webcast

In order to promote social distancing and to expand our audience, all band concerts that take place at Prairie View are streamed via YouTube live. The webcast will be available at www.spbb.org/pvms one half hour before the concert starts. Please share this link with any and all music lovers in your life!

Additionally, a recording of the performance will be available on the PVMS Band YouTube channel for the remainder of the year. We will send a direct link to this video once it is available.

Jazz Band is Starting Soon!

Jazz band is a key part of the band program in Sun Prairie and a unique ensemble offered to all students enrolled in band at Prairie View. Since sixth grade jazz band was not offered during the 2020-2021 school year, we will be offering a combined jazz ensemble for all students in sixth and seventh grade band this year.

Additionally, students who have already received at least one year of prior instruction on string bass, guitar, and piano are invited to be a part of the rhythm section. If your student is interested in a rhythm section instrument, please have them get in touch with Mrs. Gleason.

Jazz band will meet after school on Fridays and an activity bus will be available to bring students home after rehearsal. There will be an informational meeting for all interested students after school on Friday, October 15. Anyone who would like more information is encouraged to attend this no-obligation meeting.

Sun Prairie Middle School Honors Band Opportunity

For the past 15 years, Sun Prairie has hosted a middle school honors band. An "honors band" is an event that brings together eager and accomplished students from a larger geographical area for a limited amount of time with the goal of learning music with a guest music educator usually culminating in a performance. The challenge, as you would suspect, is the limited amount of time available to rehearse and refine the music. Honor bands are fantastic opportunities to meet new students, learn new music, and to work with an outstanding educator.

This all sounds great doesn't it? Yet, keep in mind that students need to be ready for this type of experience. It takes maturity and stamina to remain focused and productive for an entire day of music-making. The student must also display a certain level of skill and maturity on their instrument to be accepted. Some honor bands require a live or recorded audition while others rely on a "paper application".

There are many honor band opportunities in our area. The first is our very own Sun Prairie Middle School Honors Band. All band students in grades 6, 7, and 8 are eligible to apply for the group. Selection to this group is based on a paper application along with the music teacher's recommendation.

I would encourage all interested students to consider applying if they feel ready and excited by this opportunity. The event will be held on Saturday, November 13 at Prairie View. Interested students need to read through the linked information and fill out the application. Applications need to be returned to Mrs. Gleason by October 8th! Hard copies of the application will be available. Just ask Mrs. Gleason!

October 15, 2021 – Performers are selected - students, caregivers, and directors emailed
