3rd Quarter Coming to a Close
We can be very proud of all four of the Odyssey of the Mind teams that competed Saturday at the regional competition. It has been many years since Whitaker has participated in this powerful learning experience. Many, many dedicated hours have gone into their creative, problem-solving for both students and parent coaches.
While our teams will not be advancing to the next level, they did get us back in the OM game and we had some fun dancing it out. Join me in congratulating them. We will highlighted them on the morning news/WTKR and hope to have a complication of their presentations available to be watched.
North Carolina School Report Card for Whitaker Elementary the 2014-15 is now available on-line. Use the link above or find it on the WES website under Quick Links on the left. Spanish version offered as well.

Dismissal Update
- Safety - connecting students to their families is imperative. Additionally, the school works under the legal requirements of many custody orders. With so many adults and children intermingling at the same time, under the long-standing dismissal format, we simply cannot be assured of students connecting to parents and caregivers properly.
- Outdoor waiting - Having the car-line riders sit in the cold and wet weather has bothered us for some time. Additionally, the acoustics under the rotunda make communication an issue.
- Efficiency - Getting everyone on their way as efficiently as possible is the goal. Even though a new system, dismissal completion times have already improved.
Student Categories of Departure
- Bus riders - ride the bus
- Walkers - adults walk up to the front of the school and collect their child(ren) or they are old enough and have permission to walk home.
- Car-Line Riders - parents wait in car-line w/ signage and collect their child(ren).
Please support your children with these definitions. Many times students will say they are a car rider if their parent walks up for them and they then ride home in car. For our purposes, this student is a walker, because they walk away with their parent or caregiver.
Here is the sequence of dismissal:
- Walkers are dismissed - 5th, K, 4th, 1st, 2nd, 3rd
- Bus Riders are dismissed
- Car-line Riders will be dismissed from inside by the calling of names as has been done.
Should you walk up and your student is not waiting, a staff member will call them to meet you. We would ask that parents wait outside to maintain protocols.
Notes to the teacher are required if a student is leaving school in a different mode or with another student's family.
We are preparing a form for parents to sign if they choose for their children in grades 2nd thru 5th to walk away from school on their own.
