Tanka by Ono Komachi

Aaliyah Moore, English II Honors, 1st Period, 4.27.15

Translated by Geoffrey Bownas

Was it that I went to sleep

Thinking of him,

That he came in my dreams?

Had I known it a dream

I should not have wakened.

Why did I choose this poem?

I chose this poem because even though it's a short poem it has a deeper meaning to it. I also can relate to this poem and it's a good poem for it to be so short. I feel like the poem can have so much more meaning to it then it is showing.

Summary of the Poems message

The girl in poem sees a guy that she likes and he instantly stays in her mind and then she sees him in her dream and doesn't want to wake up from the dream. This poem is showing that just seeing someone and thinking about them can bring them into your dreams and the dream might be so good that you don't want to wake up from it.

Literary Devices

Caesura is something that can describe this poem, a caesura is a complete pause in a poem or musical composition. For example the comma after him, the question mark after dreams and the period after wakened are good examples of a caesura. Another literary device that is in this poem is imagery, in the poem it says "I should not have wakened," the word wakened helps you picture someone waking up from a dream.

Dreaming Girl by Gilly Marklew

I chose this painting because it has a girl dreaming and it's such a simple painting but it has a deeper meaning to it, just like the poem. The girl in the picture seems like she's dreaming about something and it's a really good dream and she doesn't want to wake up from it.

The River-Merchant's Wife By: Li Po

While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead

I played about the front gate, pulling flowers.

You came by on bamboo stilts, playing horse,

You walked about my seat, playing with blue plums.

And we went on living in the village of Chōkan:

Two small people, without dislike or suspicion.

At fourteen I married My Lord you.

I never laughed, being bashful.

Lowering my head, I looked at the wall.

Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.

At fifteen I stopped scowling,

I desired my dust to be mingled with yours

Forever and forever and forever.

Why should I climb the look out?

At sixteen you departed

You went into far Ku-tō-en, by the river of swirling eddies,

And you have been gone five months.

The monkeys make sorrowful noise overhead.

You dragged your feet when you went out.

By the gate now, the moss is grown, the different mosses,

Too deep to clear them away!

The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind.

The paired butterflies are already yellow with August

Over the grass in the West garden;

They hurt me. I grow older.

If you are coming down through the narrows of the river Kiang,

Please let me know beforehand,

And I will come out to meet you

As far as Chō-fū-Sa.

Why did I choose this poem?

The poem is interesting because at the beginning she didn't seem to like the boy but she still got married to him at such a young age. I feel like even though they were so young to get married that they were in love and had a future with each other.

Summary of the Poems Message

This talks about how even though at first glance the person might not seem like the person you want but if you give them a chance they can be the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.

Literary Devices

The line "I desired my dust to be mingled with yours Forever and forever and forever," can be a symbol of their love. Even though he is going away for some time she wants their love to be strong and she wants it to last forever.
