Elyria High School
It's a Great Day to be a Pioneer
January 2021
IMPORTANT UPDATE: The state released new data on COVID-19 and emphasized an uptick in new cases in Lorain County. We are monitoring this closely. As you'll read below, we are planning for an in-person return to school on January 26, however if cases continue to rise we may need to remain virtual until the situation stabilizes. Parents are asked to continue keeping child-care needs in mind should the district have to stay remote or switch to a virtual model again at any time during the second semester.
Welcome to 2021! As we approach the end of the 1st semester, I couldn't be more proud of the students and staff of Elyria High School. Despite all of the challenges we continue to face and the obstacles still thrown our way, the true pioneer spirit remains intact as we persevere forward. I truly appreciate your continued support and understanding as we work provide our students the best learning experiences and opportunities as possible.
With the district's announcement to expand the high school learning plan (2 days of instruction to 4 days), we will be readjusting our building resources to continue our ability to provide a safe in-person learning environment for our students and staff. Any significant changes will be communicated to our families. Hopefully, the Chronicle Telegram's article didn't create any confusion in their reporting of a 4 day instructional plan. The high school is still in a hybrid model, like the rest of the district, providing both in-person and virtual instruction options throughout the second semester.
Please note the important update from our district office (See above) as COVID-19 cases may impact the start of in-person learning on January 26th. Please remember we're only a phone call or email away should you need anything.
Tim Brown
EHS Principal
2nd Semester @ E.H.S.
Prior to winter break, parents were given the opportunity to request a change to their student's learning plan (in-person or virtual). If you missed the initial date, please feel free call your student's team office to discuss the possibilities of a learning plan change. We have started a waiting list for any families considering a change to their student's learning plan.
The master schedule as been rebuilt to provide a smooth transition into the 2nd semester for our students and families. We have updated the daily schedule (image to the right) to reflect a 4-day instructional plan. You will notice that many of our extension period courses will need to remain 2-day courses during the 2nd semester, and an additional period has been added to the school day (P27) to provide opportunities for students enrolled in off-cohort day classes.
While a student's homeroom (base) pod may change to ensure small in-person classroom numbers, their teachers will remain the same in full year courses. The elective semester course offered in each grade level will change not to replicate course credit. Our planned date to release 2nd semester schedules for students is by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20th.
Save the Date: We have planned a material distribution date on Wednesday, January 27th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the EHS dinning hall for students/families. More specific information to sent next week with the release of student schedules.
Finally, an announcement to our seniors (Class of 2021). We have developed a flexible course option for second semester. Reach out to your team counselor and/or assistant principal for more details about the available options.
In-Person Learning Reminders
We will continue to follow the four (4) essential recommendations from the CDC and local Health experts.
1. Wear a Mask
2. Wash Your Hands Frequently
3. Maintain Social Distancing
4. Stay Home if Feeling Ill
By continuing to follow the additional safety practices and protocols we implemented in our daily schedule, we will ensure a safe and orderly in-person learning environment for our students and staff. These specific health and safety measures include:
a. Student learning pods where the teacher rotate (eliminating class change).
b. Take home student lunches after the core instructional day.
c. Teacher monitored restroom breaks.
d. Designated entry/exit points for students by grade level as shown in the photos below.
