Overview
Using glog , to review the 10 basic colors (red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, brown, black, pink and white) students will learn what primary and secondary colors are. They will also know what two primary colors they need to mix to make one secondary color.
- red+blue=purple
- red+yellow=orange
- yellow+blue= green
Essential Question
Using the glog as a review for the 10 basic colors (red, yellow, blue, green, pink, black, white, orange brown, purple) , do you think you can make the colors green, purple and orange by only mixing blue, yellow and red?
Content Question
- Can the students identify the 10 basic colors.? (they need to do so before learning about primary and secondary colors)
- Do students know what PRIMARY COLORS are (red, blue, yellow) ? If so, are they able to name them?
- After watching the video in class, is there a better understanding?
- Do students know what secondary colors are? (orange, purple and green)
- Working in pairs, students will now learn how to make secondary colors by doing exercises on laptops, ipads and smartboards. See procedures below for what activity is being played on what technology device.
- Once finished, return back to the carpet for circle time, ask the students if they know what colors make green, orange, and purple?
- Hand out the blank color wheel for homework and have them complete it using only primary colors (red, yellow and blue) to make secondary colors (purple, green and orange)
Lesson Summary
After watching videos and playing interactive games on the technology devices, students will know what colors they need to mix to make a new color on the color wheel. Prior to the lesson, students will need to review the exploring colors glog for a review. Play the first video for the entire class then break the students into groups- no more than 3 to a group. Have the students play the assigned games on each technology device. Allow 3-4 minutes per device before having them move to a new game/device. Since there are three students per group and three technology devices- have the students take turns leading on each device. For example, Kara, Sam and Ben are in a group, Ben leads on the Ipad, Kara leads on the laptop and Sam leads on the smartboard all however working together to play the games.
Subject Level/Grade Area
Learning secondary colors would be great for Pre-K, kindergarten and first grade students
Learning Outcomes
After watching the videos on mixing colors and playing the interactive games, students will be able to make secondary colors using only primary colors.
Procedures
Before diving into three groups, play the exploring colors glog for the entire class, it's a review of the 10 basic colors. After the video ask the students "If you were only given red, yellow and blue, would you be able to make green, orange and purple? Allow a few students to answer the question.
- Play this video. Review with the class what secondary colors are.
- Divide the class into three groups of three and let them work together on the interactive games using the smart board, ipad and laptop. Have one person lead at each activity.
- Smartboard- http://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/games/mix_and_paint/mix_and_paint.html
- ipad- play colors mixing (I will leave it open on the Ipad for easy access)
- Laptopd- http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/featured-games/preschool_games_colormix.html
- After completing all three sections have them return to the carpet for circle time. Review with the class what secondary colors are and what colors we need to make them.
- If there is time, have them go to the work station and create a picture using only red, yellow and blue. Encourage them to include as many secondary colors as possible to make the picture more colorful.
- Hand out the blank color wheel page for homework and have the students complete it, reminding them they can only use RED YELLOW and BLUE. Click here if you need more pages to print out
Approxmite time needed
25 minutes in class plus a homework assignment
Prerequisites needed
Knowledge of the 10 basic colors from the first glog . Student will not be able to mix colors if they are unable to identify what color blue, red, yellow, green, orange and purple are.
Materials
Smart board
Laptop
Ipad
Wifi connection
Color wheel handout

- Paper/crayons- Only allowed for special ed students who are unable to use technology
Special Accommodations
Special needs- If the student is struggling with the interactive sites, use paper and crayons matching the same colors and have them try and mix the colors on a sheet of paper. Once they complete mixing, allow them to draw a picture mixing primary colors to get secondary colors to make it more colorful.
Non-English Speaking Students- Have them watch a video on the ipad or laptop in their native language about the basic colors.
Basic Colors
Spanish Chinese/Mandarin French
Mixing colors
Spanish
I couldn't find mixing colors in any other language but English and Spanish. This video has no words, its just music and animation. It will be great for any language.
Have them work with the other students in groups. If they are having a difficult time playing the interactive English games, have them color a picture using only primary colors.
Advanced students- If the chosen interactive sites are too easy allow them to use the following sites. These sites allow them to mix more colors than just the secondary.

Student Assessment
Since this is a Pre-K class and we have very limited time and technology resources, I will have the student color (or paint) a picture using only primary colors (this may be something we do on the next day of class). For homework, hand them a blank copy of the color wheel and ask them to complete it using only RED, YELLOW AND BLUE crayons. If the student doesn't have crayons, markers will be fine. Just let them know there's a chance they may get ruined.
