Principal's Update
The Maury Commodore Report June 3, 2021
Greetings Maury Family,
As always, I hope this newsletter finds you and your loved ones healthy and safe. Please find below some friendly reminders that I would like to share with you:
In response to Governor Ralph Northam’s recent announcement (effective May 28, 2021) calling for the easing of distancing and capacity restrictions as it relates to COVID-19, Norfolk Public Schools moved in-person graduation ceremonies from S.B. Ballard Stadium at Old Dominion University (ODU) to Chartway Arena. ODU is working with NPS to ensure that all mitigation protocols are followed so that graduates and their families can celebrate as safely as possible and experience a memorable occasion.
Graduation now takes place on June 15th at 1PM. Graduating Seniors will be issued 10 tickets each.
- Summer School is FREE. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity! Contact your guidance counselor for more details
- Student applications for summer programs are now available on the NPS website and on our school’s webpage. Paper copies can also be picked up at each school by appointment. Parents/guardians are encouraged to apply early as each program has its own specific deadline. Visit npsk12.com/summer-school for more details.
- We will be honoring our Straight A and Honor Roll students in a newsletter this month.
- Athletic Physical Schedule Released - Covers Summer Conditioning and Next School Year Athletics.
We realize that the ongoing effects of the pandemic are challenging to everyone. Remember that we always have the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of our Maury students in mind and that the health and safety of our students and staff continue to be our top priority. As always, if I can provide any additional support or answer any other questions, please let me know.
Warmest regards,
Ms. Karen Berg
Maury Principal

- Complete the final step to digital readiness. CollegeBoard will send students this information 1-3 days prior to each exam day. This process will include the exam ticket, as well as a final check to ensure that the Chromebook is digital exam ready.
- Log in to CollegeBoard no later than 30 minutes prior to the exam start time (Exam start times are 12 noon and 4 PM promptly)

For these reasons, students must come to the building, even if in VSA to take their SOL test(s). - If the final exam score will cause a reduction in the student’s course grade, the final exam score is not to be entered into the gradebook or factored into the final grade.

FEDERAL IMPACT AID SURVEY CARDS
The survey cards determine the number of federally-connected students in the public school system. Federally-connected students are those children whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) reside and/or work on federal property; children whose parents reside in federal low-rent housing, not including, Section 8 housing; and children whose parent(s) are a member of the uniformed services, but who reside off the military base, including children of foreign military officers.
Based on these criteria, data is collected from the survey cards and delivered to the federal Department of Education (DoE), which reimburses the Virginia DOE in impact aid for educating federally-connected students.
Impact aid is the only federal education program where the funds are sent directly to the school district.
Why should parents fill out the federal survey card?
Impact aid is used by the DOE in needed areas as determined by the locally-elected school board. Funds can be used for teacher salaries, school programs, materials, equipment and supplies.
How can parents help?
Parents are encouraged to fill out and return surveys to schools promptly. Non-response could result in the loss of millions of dollars in federal funds that benefit both our military and local communities.
Every card that is not returned will result in lost revenues to Virginia classrooms statewide.

UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION IN SYNERGY (PARENTVUE)
For parents not receiving robocalls, you need to be sure phone numbers are correct in synergy (aka parentvue). Click on the link below and update your information if you have already not done so. We would like to make sure that we have the most up-to-date information in synergy. Thank you.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
It is important for your child to attend their virtual classes every day. When a student misses a significant amount of school, even if the absences are excused, he or she misses critical instructional time and learning opportunities. This often has long- term, negative effects on a child, such as lower achievement and a greater chance of not graduating on time.
Attendance is part of the state accreditation status. In order to remain fully accredited, students must attend their virtual classes every day.
Questions? Contact our attendance technician, Ms. Edwards at kedwards@nps.k12.va.us
or Mr. Lawrence at hlawrence@nps.k12.va.us
