News from 7th and 8th Grade
Mathematics
The students have been working very diligently in Math and it shows! I am very proud of all the hard work being put forth. The 7th and 8th-grade students have their Ohio State Test next Tuesday, May 1st. Algebra students have the End of Course Exam for Algebra, which counts toward graduation points needed. Though this one test does not define the students, the skills and concepts being tested are ones that will be used next year in Math whether students are going to be in 8th-grade Math, Algebra or Geometry. These skills are needed to have a successful year. I know every student will give their best effort. I want to thank all the parents for the support of their sons and/or daughters. Looking forward to one more great month of learning! ~Ms. Turner

Seventh graders recently finished reading Daniel’s Story and watching the movie, The Book Thief. Both are works of fiction dealing with WWII and the Holocaust but told from different perspectives to give students a more well-rounded perspective of these historical events. ELA state testing is completed and we will finish up the school year with students doing research projects that are of high interest to them, in which they will write a short paper and prepare a visual presentation to share with the class. ~Mrs. Adams
21st. Century
Eighth graders just completed their WWII/Holocaust research projects in which they were required to write an informational/expository essay and do a presentation that represented their paper. With state testing behind us we are now working on a “Shark Tank” style project that requires brainstorming a product, doing research, writing a business plan and developing a pitch to “sell” their product. This project will require using and incorporating technology and it will help students hone their problem solving and critical thinking skills, along with encouraging creativity and cooperation. ~Mrs. Adams
Multimedia
Students in Multimedia 8 are working in the lab to create video segments for the 8th-grade movie using the scanner, digital cameras, iMovie, and Photoshop. Baby/Toddler photos of 8th graders should be turned in to Mrs. Oney by Monday, April 30th. A preview of the 8th-grade movie will be shown at the Farewell Dinner on Friday, May 4th. Seventh graders in Multimedia class are using a video maker app called Biteable to create Jazz Festival and Art Show promotional videos. On April 20, Senator Gayle Manning visited the high school and middle school. Mrs. Oney’s tech team had the opportunity to interview Senator Manning in the green screen room that day. The video interview may be viewed at https://youtu.be/PfhLTcthpRIv. Currently, tech team students are creating spring sports highlight reels, which are featured on our video announcements. Tech team students are also practicing flying our micro drones. We currently have five quadcopters that we hope to race in the near future. Building, flying and maintaining a racing fleet of microdrones requires a thorough understanding of the physics, mechanics, engineering, electronics and coding principles, along with teamwork, creative problem solving and friendly competition. The Farewell Dinner for 8th graders is right around the corner (May 4). This is a reminder to all 7th graders that have signed up to help with the dinner. If you are serving, you will need to wear black or khaki pants with any South Central shirt. Servers need to arrive at 5:45 and report to the teacher's lounge. 7th-grade boys are bringing fruit punch or lemonade and girls are bringing in a dessert. These can be dropped off anytime next week.
The 7th and 8th grade will be going to Cedar Point Friday, May 18th. We need some parent chaperones for this. Students can also order t-shirts for the trip. T-shirt orders need to be in by the end of the school day on Tuesday, May 1st. Students have been given the paperwork for the trip and the shirts. Also, the JH semi-formal Farewell Dance is Friday, May 11th. Students have permission forms for this also.
