Stanford SOAR Report
January 2019
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
From all of us here at Stanford . . . Happy New Year!
We hope that you had a successful and satisfying 2018 and that you have an amazing 2019! We look forward to learning and growing together this year. Last month, our focus was on our fourth Guideline for Success: Hawks KEEP AT IT! We encouraged students to have a growth mindset, keep trying, work hard, and never give up. Just because we have moved on to our next guideline, doesn't mean that we won't still "keep at it" at Stanford. A few of our staff members have shared their New Year's Resolutions with you, below!
Our New Year's Resolutions!
Ms. Ruegg
"My New Year's Resolution is to arrive at school by 8:15 and leave no later than 6:30."
Ms. Mulvehill
"I'm going to use tips from this book to develop better habits like eating more vegetables and not procrastinating."
Mr. Waddles
"My professional New Year's Resolution: Read 1,000 student essays. My personal New Year's Resolution: Read 25 books."
Ms. Brady
"My New Year's Resolution is to walk Signal Hill 3 to 4 times per week."
Ms. Gerritson
"My New Year's Resolution is to be more patient. It's my resolution every year, and I get a little better every year."
Ms. Levy
"My New Year's Resolution is to continue practicing Yoga every week. It not only keeps you strong and flexible, but it is a great way to relieve stress."
Ms. Koller
"My New Year's Resolution is to open up time for hobbies I enjoy, by watching less TV."
Ms. Patapoff
"My New Year's Resolution is to organize my growing collection of rubber stamps and buy more for each holiday to be included."
Ms. Wilkerson
"My New Year's Resolution: I resolve to limit eating out to no more than twice a week."
Ms. Pleasance
"My New Year's Resolution is to go back to swimming 3 days a week."

Ms. Simon
"I resolve to return to a more regular work-out schedule for a healthier, happier, and more energetic me!"
Ms. Reyes
"My New Year's Resolution is to go to the gym at least twice a week."
Stanford Community!
"We resolve to work diligently toward these goals!"
Ms. Caverly
"My New Year's Resolution is to drink more water!"
HAWKS . . . Stay Positive!
This month, our featured "Guideline for Success" is . . . Stanford Hawks Stay Positive!
Stanford Hawks will be encouraged this month to STAY POSITIVE! Do you believe that attitude is a choice? We do! Here at Stanford, we believe that people can CHOOSE to be positive. Thinking positively, using positive language, and taking positive actions are all part of student success. Let's all remind each other to stay positive.
Santa Came to Town!
Thank you, Santa, for visiting Stanford!
The day before winter break, Santa visited our school. He and his elf talked to students and staff and brought joy and excitement to our campus! Everything seemed a little bit brighter while Santa was here. Can't wait until next year!
Staff Holiday Breakfast!
THANK YOU!
Just before Winter Break, PTA and our cheerleading squad prepared a beautiful staff breakfast for us. We are so grateful for the time, effort, cost, and care invested in this special morning.
Rain Adventures!
Hawks Are Prepared!
When it rains, it pours! When we see rain in the forecast, Stanford Hawks need to be prepared. On wet days, please dress for the weather, and stay out of the puddles! The auditorium is open for lunch on days when we have a rainy day schedule.
Run, Hawks, Run!
Congratulations, Stanford Hawks!
Our Girls' Track and Field Team made us very proud. They were victorious in many events at their three track meets. Mr. Wilson and Ms. Grabowski worked hard to prepare the girls for their events, and this hard work paid off. What made us the most proud is the girls' team spirit, positivity, and sportsmanship. The girls have strong friendships with one another, and they also enjoyed meeting girls from other teams. Thank you, also, to all of the families who came out to support the students at their track meets. It was a pleasure spending time together!
Key Keepers
Unlocking Learning . . . Through Relationships!
At Stanford, we believe in building strong relationships! We know that healthy relationships make Stanford a better place to work and learn. Every month our staff spends some time recognizing the efforts of their colleagues. The people in the pictures above noticed their co- workers reaching out and connecting with our students and with each other. Well done, everyone!
The Book Fair!
Thank you, Ms. Gru!
The Book Fair was a huge success! Students and their families enjoyed looking at books and making purchases for the holiday season. Thank you, Ms. Gru, and her team, for making it all possible!
Bookmark Contest
Hawks Have Talent!
Our bookmark contest had great participation. These are just a few samples of the amazing work produced by our Stanford Students! Congratulations, artists!
Stanford HAWK/Prisk PIONEER Reading Buddies
Tuesday Trips to Prisk
Every Tuesday, some of our students walk over to Prisk to read to their students. Stanford readers are matched with younger Prisk students, and some magical moments have been made as a result. Our students have built some sweet friendships with their younger partners that have made reading more fun, for sure!
Best Friends
Making Snowballs
Students in the Best Friends Club made a holiday craft together last month. Students used yarn, cardboard, and scissors to create "snowballs." They had a great time helping each other with the project and then playing together with the product!
Instrumental Music
December's Instrumental Music Concert
It was a full house last month, as Stanford's musicians entertained us with beautiful holiday music. Ms. Brinker's selections were varied and challenging and festive. The concert was a great way to kick off the season! Congratulations, Stanford Hawks!
Elementary School Visitors
The day before winter break, Stanford instrumentalists and vocalists invited students from Bixby, Emerson, Gant, and Prisk to see a spectacular concert. As students arrived, musicians were playing outside. Then, students were invited inside to see another great show! Thank you Ms. Brinker and Ms. Moo for a great day for our current students and our future students!
Baba The Storyteller
Baba The Storyteller Came to Stanford
Last month we enjoyed a special presentation by Baba the Storyteller. He led us in an inspirational journey that included music and motivational messages. Students were invited to participate and follow along during the assembly. Thank you to Ms. Patapoff! She applied for a grant that allowed us to invite Baba to our school.
Thank you, Mrs. Kane!
The Inspiring Mrs. Kane
Mrs. Kane is a Holocaust survivor and an amazing woman. In December, she visited our campus and spoke to our 8th grade students. She shared inspiring and meaningful stories from her life, and she also had some words of wisdom for our students, as they navigate their own challenges. We all enjoyed meeting Mrs. Kane, and we are so grateful that she came to visit Stanford. Thank you, Ms. Gerritson, for inviting Mrs. Kane and arranging this important day for our 8th graders.
Teaching and Learning
Technology Training
Our teachers never stop learning. Last month, Ms. Wilkerson and Mr. Goldner provided some special technology training for our teachers. Each of them prepared meaningful and accessible lessons in technology. Students . . . your teachers are excellent students!
Get the F.A.C.S.
A Stitch in Time!
Students in Ms. Simon's classes are learning to sew. This is an incredibly important skill for students, as they grow into young men and women. Aside from being able to mend and sew their own clothing, students learn valuable math, measuring, planning, and organizational skills!
Mummified!
Stuffed Animal Mummies!
Students in our 6th Grade Ancient World History classes followed instructions to simulate the mummification process with their stuffed animals. Students followed complicated instructions, removed the "stuffing," put the "insides" in jars, and ended up with a "mummy." This was a fun experience and a window into ancient civilization.
Spelling Bee
Queen Bee!
For the second year in a row, our champion reigns supreme! Congratulations to all who participated in the Spelling Bee. Thank you, also, to Ms. Thai! So much work goes into the preparation and delivery of a successful Spelling Bee. We are all so grateful for your hard work!
