Math Workshop
Mathematicians are becoming more and more proficient using a protractor! A protractor is a good tool to have at home as well, so thank you for having one at home for your student to practice with. Next Monday we will finish the last segment of Geometry, classifying triangles. This should take roughly 5 days to review and work through. Are you wondering how to classify a triangle? Great! It will give you something to learn from your mathematician.
Questions to ask about Math:
Can you draw a 72 degree angle?
What is special about a straight angle?
How do you remember the difference between an obtuse and an acute angle?
Reading & Language Workshop
Readers are finishing up with Unit 6: Power. Our essential question has been, “How can language be powerful?” We have read books throughout the unit in Language Workshop and in Literature Discussion groups about people who have used words to convey a message. Our last book that we read for LW was about Malala. Students were amazed that such a young girl could make such an enormous impact for others in regards to education and rights. Please look forward to seeing your child’s final assessment about Malala. The kids did a wonderful job using her speech to the UN to justify their thinking about how words can be powerful.
Writing Workshop
Writers are in the process of completing literary essays. A literary essay is an opinion piece of writing that focuses on a book, and uses text evidence to support an opinion. Students have explored what a good introduction includes, as well as body paragraphs, and conclusions.
Questions to ask about ELA:
What is your literary essay about? Is there a theme? What is it?
What are you most proud of in regards to your Malala essay?
What is the most important thing that you learned about the power of words?
