Captain Toussaint visited 1st Grade!
Mr. Toussant told students about the history of Veterans Day: It began as Armistice day in 1919, at the end of World War I, on November 11, 1919. In 1954 the name was changed to
Veterans Day.
Do you know? Is it veterans or veteran's day?
Veterans Day does NOT have an apostrophe. A lot of people think it's “Veteran's Day” or “Veterans' Day,” but that is incorrect. The holiday is not a day that “belongs” to one veteran or multiple veterans, which is what an apostrophe implies. It's a day for honoring all veterans — so no apostrophe needed.

Clips and Tips from Ms. Gulden: Rhyming
Below is link to a Rhyming lesson using a multi-sensory approach to learning. The students practice rhyming by hearing two words that have the same ending sounds. Students put a thumbs up if the sounds at the end of the word are same and a thumbs down if the sounds are not the same.

What is Phonemic Awareness?
“Phonemic Awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds, which are called phonemes. A child who is phonemically aware is able to isolate sounds, manipulate sounds, blend and segment the sounds into spoken and written words.” –Dr. Michael Heggerty, Phonemic Awareness: The Skills That They Need to Help Them Succeed!

Career Presenters Wanted
This year’s Career Connections Day is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, from 9:20 a.m to 12:15 p.m. We would like to give our 3rd and 4th grade students the opportunity to hear about possible career choices in the following fields:
1. Arts and Communication
2. Business Finance
3. Information Technology
4. Engineering and Industry Technology
5. Human Services
6. Science and Health
We’re looking for energetic presenters. Students love hands-on activities, so we welcome visual aids, displays, props and uniforms. We would also be interested in jobs within these fields that may be lesser known. If you or someone you know is interested and able to help us, please e-mail our School Counselor, Rob Crozier, at rcrozier@neshaminy.org.
Volunteer Clearances
Since the approval process can take several weeks, please file for your clearances ASAP so that they are in place when needed.
Diversity Showcase
Pearl S. Buck Elementary and Neshaminy School District at large celebrates diversity in our community. We have chosen to use our front lobby showcase to display “artifacts” from the different cultures that make up the Pearl Buck community. Last year, we had five families bring in pieces such as pottery, food prep items, mini-sculptures, photos, art, clothing, dolls, games, musical instruments and a variety of other items to represent the parts of their heritage to which they felt most connected. The cultures represented last year included: Italian, Korean, Chinese, Irish and Puerto Rican. Thank you to our contributors of last year. We’d love for more families to be able to contribute this year and have representation from multiple, new cultures.
We would like to turn the showcase over to your families for the rest of the year. (Saving April for a cultural display by our 4th grade for the art show J) I believe we would have enough room to represent 4 families/cultures per month. If you would be interested in contributing to the display, please sign up under the month that works best for you. Please write in the name of your child/ren and the culture your artifacts will be representing. If possible, try to sign up among cultures different from your own. Everything will be kept under lock and key.
Mrs. McGuigan will coordinate drop-off and pick-up with families. You can contact her at kmcguigan@neshaminy.org with any questions. Thank you for your interest!
What's for lunch!?
Be Allergy Aware!
Due to varied allergy and dietary needs, please contact your child's teacher before sending in food or other items intended to be distributed to students in a classroom (e.g. birthday celebrations, class parties). Students should not share food at any time during school - even with a close friend. A seemingly harmless food item may unexpectedly contain allergens, or interact with other medical conditions. Teachers may choose to avoid food-oriented experiences altogether. Please consider non-food treats as an alternative. Speak directly with your child's teacher. Do not send in any items until the teacher has responded and confirmed the appropriateness of your request. Thanks!
