May 2023 Family Newsletter
Parents and Guardians,
Sprint to the Finish
As we close the 2022-2023 school year, I want to thank our families for making the necessary sacrifices to prepare their children to learn. Being a parent is a difficult, but rewarding responsibility. Moving forward I hope that we can continue a partnership of learning and growth for your student.
May is always an exciting month in public education. It signals the celebration of the end, as well as serving as a month of recognition for achievements of the school year. For our seniors, it signals the end of their K-12 educational experience. Over the next three weeks, I ask our students and families to push to the end and finish strong.
Seniors
To the Senior Class of 2023, thank you for showing resiliency over the past four years of your educational career. During your 9th grade year, school was abruptly ended by COVID-19. You basically spent your 10th-grade year online, and when you returned you had to learn in temporary classrooms during the construction phase of the campus remodel. As 11th graders you started school remotely, only to enter school under COVID protocols wearing masks throughout the building. This senior year has been the first "normal" year you experienced during your high school career. So for our seniors, I wish them the great future that they deserve.
The scheduled last day for seniors is Friday, May 19th. On this day seniors will report to school for graduation practice and final closing activities that have been highlighted in your Senior Newsletters. Graduation will be on Sunday, May 28th, at 1:00 p.m., at F & M Bank Stadium.
Teacher Appreciation
May is the month that we celebrate Teacher Appreciation. Thank you to our teachers and support staff that spend long hours creating lessons that are engaging to the minds of our students. Thank you for showing up daily to sometimes serve many different roles other than that of a teacher. Your dedication to our students and your peers is inspiring, I thank you for your service. We will celebrate our teachers during the week of May 8th through May 12th.
Preparing for Summer
If you plan on participating in an event next year, be proactive. Seek out the advisors or coaches for the activity/sport and ask them about the summer calendar or how to get involved next year. One of the ill effects that is still around from COVID is that people have forgotten to advocate for themselves. So I am asking you to reach out and find out what you need to know. Don't wait for someone to just hand something to you.
All Sports Physicals
Don't wait to get your student their sports physical. The Galesburg Athletic Booster Club will be providing an All Sports Physical Night for students entering the junior high and high school grade levels. This event will take place on Thursday, May 25th in the Galesburg High School Fieldhouse, from 5:30-7:30 pm. Note: This physical does not replace the 9th-grade comprehensive medical physical for incoming Freshman students.
In closing, I hope we can all finish the year strong. As we look back, I hope we can reflect on the year and look at our accomplishments as well as the areas where we need to improve to move forward and do better the next time. Thank you for choosing to be a Silver Streak. It is time to "finish the drill" with great effort.
In Silver and Gold,
Mr. Hawkins
What's Happening at the 7-12 Campus
Every week, something new is happening on the 7-12 Campus. At Galesburg Junior Senior High School we aim to provide a multitude of experiences for our students and the local community. The Glow Run/Walk was open to the whole community with the goal of raising money to fight cancer. Our 8th graders experience the "Real World" for a day, learning to navigate the budgeting process. Finally, our district leaders are committed to providing our science students with hands-on learning opportunities.
