St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 9 - Term 3 (Thursday 17 September)
St Jerome’s Primary School acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Owners and Elders, both past and present, of the lands on which this school is located.
Dear Parents and members of our school community
Flowers of Spring Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the wonderful season of spring.
During this sweet time, we ask You for a
fresh beginning in each of our hearts.
Please allow each of us, as Christians, to
bloom in Your word, just as the flowers
are blooming.
Help us to be witnesses whenever there is
an opportunity, and followers of Your word
every day.
Let our petals continuously grow and our
leaves steadily extend, as we work to gather
more seedlings for Your harvest.
In Your precious name, we pray.
Amen
Question 4, which was about the distance people live from school was very informative with 129 families living more than two kilometres away. I also thank the hundred people who left comments. I absolutely understand people's reluctance to allow children to walk to school, even in pairs.
The roads around our school are very busy and even a Year 6 student would need to be 100% alert for dangers. Some families mentioned the Walking School Bus Idea that several WA schools use.
The Parish, School Board and I are meeting with City of Cockburn councillors and officials this afternoon. Thank you to the many families who are now arriving after 3.15pm and using the many car park spaces. This has made a real difference to the traffic flow along Rockingham Road.
Any requests regarding exceptional circumstances must be made in writing by Thursday 15 October.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Dear Parents,
Parent-Teacher interviews are being held for years Pre-Primary to year 6 from 14th September to 25th September
Interviews will be of 10 minutes duration.
Using this system you will be able to book the interview times that suit you best from any internet-connected computer.
Please access the system as follows:
- Go to the school’s home page: https://www.stjeromes.wa.edu.au/portal/
- Click the PTO icon (red mouthed smiley face)
Click “Obtain PIN/Password” and enter your email address.
Your PIN will be emailed to you.
- Full instructions are provided to you after log in. Please note the following points:
- When you log on, the system displays only your own child/children. Bookings are made for individual parents/guardians, not for couples. Couples can however log on to the system simultaneously to coordinate bookings. If two parents/guardians wish to attend a single interview time slot, one parent/guardian should make the booking then both can attend.
- You will only see time slots that are available at the time you are using the system. As time slots are booked for teachers, those time slots are no longer displayed as available. PTO prevents double-booking of teachers or parents/guardians.
- When you have made all the bookings you require, you can download or email a report of your bookings in time order for printing. You can log in and change bookings any time up to 1 day before the interviews.
- If you see this symbol displayed along side the class name, it means this teacher recommends that you book an interview.
- Other parents may be making bookings at the same time that you are using the system. It is possible, though unlikely, that a time slot is displayed to you as available, but is then booked by another parent shortly afterwards. If you then attempt to book this time slot it will not be available and a message will be displayed to indicate this.
- If you encounter any problems using PTO please contact the school office by phone on 94999500 or by email to admin@stjeromes.wa.edu.au
Yours sincerely
Carol Hoare
If you have not already organised an interview with your child’s class teacher, please use the link below to the school portal and then click on the PTO link to make a booking.
Chickenpox
There have been some diagnosed cases of Chickenpox in our lower Primary classes.
This is a common, acute, viral infection. Symptoms include fever, fatigue and a generalised rash characterised by small blisters that rupture to form crusts.
Please contact your doctor or Health Direct on 1800 022 222 should you have any concerns.
Click on the following link for more information.
REMINDER TO BRING WATER BOTTLES
As the weather is beginning to warm up, please remember to bring a bottle of water to school each day. Why water? It is essential to stay hydrated!
It is recommended that:
• Children aged 5 – 8 years drink 1000ml per day (4 big cups) • children aged 9 – 12 years drink 1500ml per day (6 big cups) • young people aged 13+ years drink 2000ml per day (8 big cups).
Bottles of water are sold at the school canteen for those children who have forgotten their bottle.
Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum - Parent Tips
Tip #13 – Teach your child about their Early Warning Signs. They are our body’s way of telling us when we feel unsafe. Early Warning Signs include sweating, feeling hot, heart beating fast, clammy hands, shaky knees, the need to go to the toilet quickly, and so on.
Tip #14 – Teach your child that they can say “No” to anyone if they feel unsafe. If they get their Early Warning Signs, regardless of whether this person is an adult in authority or someone they would usually be expected to obey, they can say “No”.

Uniform News
As Term 4 is approaching so quickly now might be a great time to make sure that summer uniforms still fit. We are almost back to normal in our shop, just keeping entry to one family at a time please. Emailed orders are still welcome but please include your child’s name, class, sizes required and card details for payment please. Items are sent through to class message baskets so that we are not interrupting. Larger orders can be collected from Reception. Orders via phone are also welcome however, if we are serving at the counter we are unable to answer the phone at the same. You’re welcome to leave a message with all order details which will be attended to in due course.
SHOP CLOSURE: Our shop will be closed on Tuesday (13/10) after the holidays, the first trading day will be Thursday the 15th. We continue to be open on both Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of term from 8.15am through to 3.30pm.
For anyone wanting to get organized for 2021, feel free to head in and either purchase, or perhaps layby, before the extremely busy times we experience at the end of the year. For children transitioning from Pre-Primary to Year 1 in 2021 the uniform requirements list can be found on our website.
Knitting Club Thanks
Knitting Club will conclude for 2020 this coming Tuesday. Our weekly sessions would not have been possible without the very generous assistance of our volunteers and we thank them sincerely.
Special thanks also to those people who are knitting beanies or squares at home. Could you please send these in by the end of the term so that we can organize distribution to King Edward Memorial Hospital and Beanies for Babies in the Pacific. We look forward to sharing some photos with you in the future.
It has been a privilege to spend time with our students knitting and crocheting each week. They are such a happy group who have enjoyed trying out a new skill and achieving amazing results. We are extremely proud of our students and look forward to resuming next winter.
With thanks Joanna
St Jerome's Day Celebrations
St Jerome's Day takes on a 'new look' this year.
- We will celebrate Mass outdoors down at the back of the oval.
- Each class is organising a stall so that we can enjoy a mini-fete. Funds raised will be directed to Caritas Australia. Families may be asked to supply certain goods to assist. All stalls will cost no more than a silver coin.
- If your child does not enjoy a sausage in a bun, send their own packed lunch on this day.
