News from the Sixth Grade Team
We have had a great start to the 2022-2023 school year! We are thoroughly enjoying the sixth grade students and look forward to a great year together. Here are some reminders and announcements that parents and guardians will find helpful:
Agenda checks will be done every Monday. Students will receive $100 for the agenda check and have $50 deducted if it is not signed or not filled out. Please sign your student’s agenda and check to see that it is filled out for that week.
Paydays are done every Thursday ($200). Please sign the checkbook by Thursday. If your student forgets the payday on Thursday, there is an opportunity to get a late payday on Friday ($100).
The advisory teachers would love for you to send in a box of tissues with your student. We will pay your student $100 in their checkbook for the donation.
All classes require the use of earbuds or headphones. Please make sure your student has at least one set, and it may be a good idea to purchase a back up (inexpensive set from a dollar store…).
All students need a separate folder and notebook for ELA.
Homecoming is early this year- Friday, September 16. We will be doing a spirit week the week of September 12-16. There will be a 6th thru 8th grade dance on Friday, September 16 from 3:00-5:00 in the cafeteria.
Sixth grade camp information will be coming. All forms can be filled out online this year. Sixth grade camp is now a day camp, and we will attend during school hours. Our dates for camp are October 19-21. Half of the classes will attend on October 19, and the other half will go on October 20. Our entire group will attend on October 21. The cost for this day camp will be $60.
Let us know if you have questions or concerns. Thanks!

Dress Code Reminder
Please be reminded that Hopkins Middle School does have a dress code policy in place which is strongly enforced. Below is an excerpt from the Student Handbook as it pertains to the dress code.
Show GOOD CHARACTER!!
Hopkins Middle School is constantly striving to provide the best possible environment for student learning and achievement. This is a reminder to parents and students of the clothing guidelines as described in the student handbook, which is available online. https://www.hpsvikings.org/wp-content/uploads/HMS-student-handbook-web-copy-22-23.pdf Our standards regarding these policies will be administered consistently. Student attire can have a significant effect on learning and behavior. To avoid any negative impact on our students’ learning, clothing must cover the body sufficiently and avoid attracting excessive attention or causing disruptions.
As a reminder, here’s a summary of our dress code:
Dress Code –Students are expected to keep themselves properly groomed and neatly dressed at all times. An individual’s appearance has a bearing on how he/she acts and how others react. Neatness of appearance and cleanliness of a person reflects an expression of pride of one’s self and in one’s community. Dress should be neat, clean, decent and appropriate for the learning situation. Any form of dress which is considered contrary to good hygiene or which is disruptive or distracting to the purpose of the school will not be permitted. Students will be asked to change into appropriate attire. If attire is not available, the school will provide.
1. Dress should be neat, clean, comfortable and in good taste. Shoes will be worn at all times.
2. The wearing of hats and head coverings is prohibited in school. Exceptions may include Spirit Days.
3. If poor personal hygiene becomes disruptive to the educational environment, parents will be contacted and appropriate steps to resolve the issue will be taken.
4. Non-prescription sunglasses will not be worn in the school building.
5. Shirts need to be appropriate: Tops that expose the midriff, cleavage, back, or bare sides (such as muscle shirts, tank tops, or cut-off t-shirts) are considered inappropriate. Sleeveless shirts must be a minimum of a hand’s width wide on the shoulder. Strapless tops are not allowed.
6. Skirt/Skort/Shorts length must come to a minimum of the student’s fingertips when arms are naturally at the side.
7. Clothing must not be too tight, too short, too sheer, or too revealing whether standing or seated, this includes tights and leggings, that may be deemed inappropriate by an administrator. If you choose to wear these items where the outline of private body parts are noticeable, a long top must cover all a student’s private parts fully.
8. Clothing that allows undergarments to be seen are not allowed. This includes pants with holes and “sagging” pants.
9. Any article of clothing that graphically depicts anything in poor taste (i.e. tobacco/alcohol products or advertisements, profanity, etc.) will not be allowed.
10. Coats and backpacks shall remain in a student’s locker.
NOTE: Interpretation of the Dress Code is left to the discretion of school staff members. Any form of extreme or conspicuous dress that disrupts the educational process will be subject to corrective action and/or disciplinary action see page 10 for consequences. Students in violation of the dress code will not be permitted to attend regular classes until properly dressed.
Dear Parent/Guardian:
We would like to offer your student the opportunity to participate in a program at Hopkins Middle School called “Hand2Hand”. This program helps provide a student with food for the weekends and is intended for families who currently may be experiencing a financial burden. The first backpack is set to be delivered on September 16, 2022.
Here’s how Hand2Hand will work: At the end of the week students who are signed up for the program will receive a minimum of 10 food items in a black school logo drawstring bag that will be provided at the first week of participation. These food items will be a combination of breakfast, snacks, lunch and/or dinner items. While the food items are meant for the student, they can be shared among the family as well. (Please note: if your student or another family member has food allergies it will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to check the contents of the backpack each week to ensure the food doesn’t contain ingredients which could cause an allergic reaction).
There is no cost to participate! If you sign your student up to receive Hand2Hand, they will continue to receive the weekly bags each week they are at Hopkins Middle School. However, if down the road you no longer need the assistance, simply write a note expressing your desire to discontinue receiving Hand2Hand bags and give this note to the school office. This opportunity is being provided by LifeChange Community Church. To learn more about Hand2Hand, please visit their website:
If you feel your student would benefit from this opportunity, please complete the response form at
the bottom of this letter and return it to your student’s teacher by September 9, 2022 and we will
make sure that your student’s name is then added to the list. Your response will be kept confidential.
Sincerely,
Scott Stockwell
