School Safety
Safety Message from Superintendent Dignan
Please read through the communication that Dr. Dignan sent out earlier this week regarding Safety in all of our schools.
--------------------------------------------------------
Dear Wayne-Westland Community School Students, Staff and Families,
Recently several Michigan school districts were affected by false threats. While Wayne-Westland Community Schools did not receive any of these threats, I want to remind you of our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment in all of our schools and to ask for your help to ensure that we can meet this objective.
Threat hoaxes are disruptive to learning and take critical resources away from where they should be focused-on the education of our students. These kinds of false threats also cause unnecessary stress and anxiety not only throughout our school buildings but across the entire community. That is why I am calling on our families to help us reinforce to students that threats of violence-real or false-are unacceptable and will result in serious disciplinary action, including potential legal ramifications. Please view this Wayne County School Threat/Safety Video.
While recent incidents have focused on false threats, our community must remain vigilant in protecting our children against real ones. Please encourage your children to speak up responsibly and appropriately when there is an issue involving the safety of our students and staff.
Students should immediately notify a school staff member or a trusted adult if they become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else. Students can also use the confidential Ok2Say tip line by;
Calling 8-555-OK2SAY (855-565-2729)
Texting 652729 (OK2SAY)
Emailing OK2SAY@mi.gov
Wayne-Westland Community Schools take all threats seriously. All families will receive official communication from the school with details. If you have questions or concerns, contact your building principal. Thank you in advance for your time and attention on this critical issue.
Sincerely,
John Dignan, Ed.D.Superintendent
Communicable Disease Reminders
Dear Wayne-Westland Families,
As the winter weather progresses and we spend more time indoors, illnesses continue to thrive. We are seeing a rise in the number of ill students and staff. Below is a reminder of the district health policies. The MDHHS (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services) recommends, and the district requests, the following protocols:
Fever: A child has a temperature of 100.4F taken by mouth or 99.4F taken under the arm. The child will be sent home. The child should not return until 24 hours of no fever without using fever-reducing medications.
Diarrhea: A child has two loose or watery stools, even if there are no other signs of illness. The child will be sent home. The child should have no loose stools for 24 hours before returning to school.
Vomiting: A child that is vomiting will be sent home. The child should have no vomiting episodes for 24 hours before returning to school. (Exception: a healthcare provider has determined that the vomiting is due to a noninfectious condition such as ulcer, anxiety, or pancreatitis.)
Strep Throat: Students should not return to school until 24 hours after the antimicrobial medications have been started.
Pink Eye: Students will be sent home at the first signs of illness and should not return to school until after being on medication for 24 hours.
Ringworm: Treatment may be delayed until the end of the day. No exclusion is necessary if treatment starts before the next day's return.
Head Lice: Students with live lice may stay in school until the end of the day. Immediate treatment at home is advised.
Please note that based on guidelines from the Michigan Department of Education, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the district does not send out notifications when there is a case of one of the above at your child's school.
We appreciate your understanding as we work together to keep everyone healthy.
Sincerely,
John Dignan, Ed.D.
