MARINER MEMO

11/15-11/19/2021

PRINCIPAL'S NOTE

Dear Sehome Community,

I hope this message finds you safe and dry! It was a wild weekend. We will not have school today due to water on the roadways. If school is open again on Tuesday, it will be a B-day.

If you have not had a chance to see Sehome Drama's production of Macbeth, this is your last week to see it. It is an incredible show and so amazing to see our drama students back in the theater. Information on how you can see this show is below.

A huge congratulations to our orchestra, band, and choir students for being selected for all state!

Fall sports finished up this weekend. We had a record number of fall athletes and it was so fun to see everyone out there competing together. Updates on the seasons are highlighted below (thanks @sehomesportsmed for putting together this collection) Winter sports start this week. If students are interested in joining winter sports, please have them talk to Kristin Cerenzia in our Athletics and Activities office this week!

First quarter grades will be posted today on Skyward. Printed progress reports will be mailed to all families later this week. If you have any questions about posted grades, please reach out to the teacher.

I hope you all have a great day! Know that we appreciate each one of you!

2 - SHAKESPEARE'S MACBETH

NOVEMBER 11-13, 18-20

The world as we know it has ended in this fantasy version of the Shakespeare classic. A trio of otherworldly spirits prophesize that Macbeth, the beloved war general, will someday be king. Consumed by ambition and coerced by the Lady Macbeth, Macbeth kills the king in the night to take the kingdom. Civil war erupts in the land as Macbeth is haunted by ghosts, guilt, and challenges to the throne. Featuring original music, fight choreography, and student-created sets/costumes, this is a show not to be missed!

4 - FEDERAL TAX CREDIT INFORMATION

We are partnering with local advocates for families to share information about the Child Tax Credit with our families here in Bellingham Public Schools. During these difficult times we want to make sure families know of services available to them.

  • All families should be receiving up to $300 a month for each child through the Child Tax Credit. This is your money to help with the cost of raising your children.
  • Even if your family doesn’t typically need to file taxes, filling out the Non-Filer Form this year could help you claim the Child Tax Credit, worth up to $3,600 per child.
  • Visit the Child Tax Credit Information page to learn more about eligibility and the program, or to sign up. #ChildTaxCredit
  • The deadline for non-filers to sign up for the tax credit payments is November 15.

PTSA SNACK DRIVE FOR SEHOME'S LEARNING CENTER

The Learning Center needs your help!

It’s a great sight to see the tables and chairs full of learners! However, it means we’re running low on snacks. We have enough snacks to get us through to Thanksgiving break, but after that it looks grim.

Here is a wishlist on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/BTN3YUG5WQNZ?ref_=wl_share that shares what snacks the students enjoy the most, but anything is great!

Thank you so much for your support!

6 - LOCKDOWN DRILL NOVEMBER 19

Dear Sehome Families,

The safety and welfare of our students and staff is our highest priority at Sehome High School. This Friday, November 19, we will practice a lockdown drill. We practice safety drills throughout the year to help our staff and students know what to do in an emergency. Our school has worked closely with local authorities and district safety personnel to correctly develop and implement safety procedures. The goals of drills throughout the school year are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries. These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency operation plans and improve our response skills.

A Lockdown Drill means that there is danger on site and in the building. Classroom-based protocol requires:

· Locking the classroom door

· Turning off the lights

· Closing all window shades

· Placing students out of sight of any corridor window

· Students should remain quiet

We know that these drills can be potentially nerve-wrecking for students. For this reason, we encourage you to talk with your child, if you deem it appropriate, about the drill. Our goal, while practicing important safety procedures, is to be sure all students feel safe.

If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to email or call me at bethany.barrett@bellinghamschools.org or (360)746-5839.

8 - LASAGNALOVE.ORG - WHO NEEDS A HOT MEAL?

Message from one of our Sehome parents -

WHO NEEDS A HOT MEAL?

I just signed up to be a volunteer chef for a nationwide organization called Lasagna Love. AND, I learned after having no matches in week 1 that they do not have many meal requests from Bellingham. So this is a reach out – if you know ANYONE in Bellingham or nearby who is having a hard time with food, time, or money, and would benefit from a free family size lasagna, please send them to this organization to learn more and to request (top right menu) a lasagna for themselves or for someone they know. Then I can start cooking and taking care of my community. And of course, if you would like to volunteer to cook like I did, you can do that below too.

13 -REMINDER FROM SCHOOL NURSE

Reminder: As we enter cold and flu season, please continue to monitor your student(s) for symptoms of COVID-19 (sore throat, cough, fever, congestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, runny nose, recent loss of taste or smell, shortness of breath, and fatigue). If your child has 1 or more symptom of any duration, they cannot come to school for 10 days OR they can return after getting a PCR COVID-19 test with a negative result. You can find information on the school district website: https://bellinghamschools.org/covid-19-information/. Testing is available through Whatcom County Health Department (360-778-6075) OR through the Bellingham airport site at testdirectly.com/whatcom.

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL

When a student requires medication at school, either prescription or over the counter (OTC), parents/guardians must return a completed medication authorization form with directions from a licensed health care provider (LHCP) to Sehome. One exception is that certain OTC medications that are self-administered do not require LHCP instructions, but they do require a parent/guardian to complete the medication authorization form. There is no situation that a student taking medications at school does not need a medication authorization on file.

The privilege of students self-caring their medications, whether prescription or OTC, requires students to take their medication as instructed on the authorization and being aware that they may not share their medications with anyone. Medications brought to school must be in the original prescription container or manufacturers labelled OTC container. Medication authorizations expire at the end of the current school year, or sooner as per LHCP instructions.

Link to Medication Authorization Form can be found here
