From the Desk of Mr. Roote
First...have a great spring break! If you have a trip planned and would be willing to take the Find the Fox fox with you and send me some pictures of him/her enjoying the trip for Twitter that might be a fun way to promote some esprit de corps while on a break.

A few weeks ago I took advantage of an opportunity to pull together a small team of your colleagues to discuss remediation tactics and things that get in the way of their effective implementation. The meeting quickly warmed up after a discussion about the things we struggle to exert control over: Chronic absenteeism, Willful avoidance, Behavior etc. My unspoken agenda going into the meeting was to inspire the group to consider electronic remediation in the form of a web-based program. I am happy to share that in as few as two weeks since the meeting we will have connected Living Environment and Algebra I students to an e-learning program designed to maximize their success on their Regents in June. I share the preceding to inspire you to begin to look at the tools you will use to ready your students for success on your end of year assessment. It is never too early to dust off an old review packet and look for opportunities to push it from LOTS to HOTS. Also, you will want to be careful in your decision to teach new material right up until the end of the school year. From some very casual and non-scientific data collecting methods, I have noticed increased student success when more class time is spent revisiting/spiraling back old material as review topics as opposed to quickly glossing over new material. Naturally, you need to cover all your content so if you are pushing to the bitter end to nail some stuff in the 70% zone (70-must teach to mastery, 20-must teach, and 10-should teach) you may want to reconsider your scope and sequence.

As we finish the third marking period and move towards the homestretch, I wanted to share some discipline data that suggests we have improved in changing student behaviors through our intervention systems. In March of 2015/16, there were 283 disciplinary referrals processed. In March of this school year, there were 186 referrals processed. I am hoping that this translated to a decrease in class disruptions and an increase in student academic achievement. Below is a list of the most referred incidents in March:
- Illegally Absent/Tardy to School
- Class Cut
- Inappropriate Behavior
- Insubordination
Mash Up
Celebrating NHS graduate, Dominic Ortiz, class of 2015. This is a great story!
I will be holding juniors in the auditorium tomorrow at 1:45 pm for a few words from me and our Jostens rep. Scott Fitch. Your help getting them focused is appreciated.
Please confiscate lacrosse ball being bounced against walls/lockers/floors etc. Here is my recommendation for an entry point to avoid conflict: "Can I have your lacrosse ball please? They are a safety issue and disruptive when bounced in our halls. You can pick it up from the main office at the end of the week." When a student refuses please avoid further engagement and produce a referral for insubordination.
We are looking for special education teachers to host a student teacher. Those with freshman are preferred. Let me know. Tom
REPRINT: Mr. Cook, "I'm inviting all of you to join me in planting flowers during Community Pride Day, 5/20. We start at 9:30 am, people get assigned an area and pick up flowers that are donated by the Village and get to work. Usually done by 11:00 am, if not before. Let me know if you would like to join me and we can make plans accordingly."
WTCC BOCES April 13: Seniors will attend during their regular schedule to help with the 8th graders competition. No Juniors will be attending Thursday at WTCC unless they received a special request letter from Ms. Roloson (which would have to be signed). The New Visions program at Newark Hospital is not affected by this schedule so if there are any juniors in that program they will still attend that day.
Social Emotional Learning and the Plan for Excellence
Students that struggle with the large/unstructured environment that is our gym during pep assemblies may report to Ms. Fellenz instead. Please allow your kids to consider this option. Thanks Jan!
