Space RACE

The Space Race

The Space Race is a competition in spaceflight capability between the US and the Soviet Union. After WWII, both countries realized how important rocket research is to military. It began with the Russian launch of the first satellite - Sputnik in 1957. For half-century, the two superpowers competed for supremacy in space exploration in order to ensure their own safety. Pioneering satellite and space probes were sent out to orbit around different planets; humans were sent to low Earth orbits and the Moon.

How it Parallel the Cold War

The competition of space exploration in the Space Race paralleled the competition of arms developments in the Cold War. Both competitions are fueled by a growing threat of the security of each superpower.
