Dropped Bowl
Dropped Bowl with Scatered Slices and Peals
Background History
Clause Oldenburg is a famous artist from the Pop Art movement, and also the creator of "Dropped Bowl" a sculpture in Miami. He was born in 1929 and is still alive today, which means he has been through Great Depression, World War 2 and the Baby Boom. He went to the Art Institute of Chicago and has done more than 40 large scale sculptures. Dropped Bowl was one of his large scale sculptures and repersents the diversity of the city of Miami. It was commissioned in September of 1984, by Metro Dade Art In public Places Trust. It was installed five years later in September 1989.
Artist statement
Oldenburg states that his Dropped Bowl sculpture contains the perfect materials in order to reflect meaning. Water is one of those materials and his inclusion of an orange is also appropriate since it is associated with Florida. They thought the bowl with sharp broken pieces would be interesting as well as interactive with the water. It sounded like they did not have many difficulties with this sculpture because of their thought process. They started off this process by sketching out their ideas. Then they made models. They were also pleased with how they were able to communicate their ideas in the sculpture to relate to its surroundings and context.

Perspective of how big the sculpture is
My opinion
My opinion is that Oldenburg does a great job on his work and is not afraid to show his personality in his work. Oldenburg expresses how he wishes the world would be, kind of like his own fantasy world. In the sculpture Dropped Bowl Scattered pieces I liked how the sculpture Just opens your imagination. I like how it also looks like it just literally got dropped by a giant. That's why I like his art, because it fills me with humor and joy. If I could go see a sculpture this would be one of them.
