Cognitive-behavioral psychology can be used in classrooms with students who have learning and behavior problems (Bentley, n.d.). It is believed that the combination of Albert Bandura’s social learning theory and cognitive-behavior management applied to the classroom can facilitate improved self-efficacy, more appropriate behavior, increased academic success, and even foster social justice (Bentley, n.d.). Both students and teachers must learn to modify their behaviors to assist students with the attainment of a positive, environment conducive to gaining the most out of the curriculum (Bentley, n.d.). Teachers can do this by learning how to share leadership roles and responsibilities (Bentley, n.d.). Then teaching goal attainment and enhancing self-efficacy beliefs (Bentley, n.d.). Students can learn to increase their success expectations and reward themselves for their achievements. I homeschooled all three of my children and all three have different learning styles. My daughter has dyslexia and it was imperative for me as her teacher to learn effective methods for helping her to overcome this learning disability. With the use of cognitive behavior modification, I was able to help her to develop techniques that built her self-efficacy, attain her goals, and reward her success in all aspects of life. She still struggles with reading, but she is doing well in college and strives to maintain the goals that she set for herself at the beginning of the semester.
